moderator obsession

I don't use a moderator, but I do wear hearing protection and certainly when zeroing etc. To be honest I would use hearing protection even if I had a moderator as a centre fire moderator is still quite loud.

I have though about it long and hard, but up till now they certainly upset the balnce etc. Perhaps the titanium ones are worth a look. I am taking one shot every couple of weeks with a 243. This hardly makes a disturbance compared to pigeon shooters, or bird scarers that are going off all the time. The deer I am stalking dont seem to worry about the noise of the shot either - may times I have had others mill around for several minutes after the shot.

How many of you zero your rifle with moderators on and no ear protection?
Afraid to say if you are relying on your moderator to protect your hearing you may be in for a shock in later life.

One or the other but never both accept at a range.

Neil. :)

but surely a CF shot with a moderator is still worse than one without heard through earplugs?

Yes,I shoot 90% of my shots with my ear plugs in. Thats with all my rifles, CF,RF's and air rifles which are all moderated. My hearing is crap, i'm trying to keep what i've got left. Wearings hearing protection only slows the loss rate down, it does not stop it. I get tested every year and am slightly worse year on year

I guess being younger and with decent hearing I'm not too concerned, maybe that will change with age - so I apologise for being sceptical,,but I sometimes do wonder about commercialism, a bit like the replacement recoil lugs for T3's! LOL.

This aint the same as the £45 special stainless key steel lug malarkey...

Have you had your hearing tested? Because when you notice a loss it's to late

Yes alot of people I bet have one or two shoots close to built up area's so keeping the noise down as much as possible helps. Even though cf's are still fairly loud. Even a hmr has a fair amount of noise with out a moderator on it.

Your right though. A lot of people who move Upto cf rifles after having rimfires. Soon see how much expense it comes to. Rifle cost' ammo cost'screwcut cost' then moderator cost. They also soon see the big difference in cost for bases and rings..

Im not to worried about noise as such. Though I dont want to wear hearing protection. So a moderator is a must for me.

Though I will wear them when shooting shotguns in a hide

Jay 22, hope you can lip read. If you can't start learning! Seriously though use a mod and hearing protection. If I'm anywhere that there is a background noise I can't hear what the person next to me is saying

IMO noise pollution is a growing threat to our sport so anything to reduce that threat must be a good thing.
More and more people are retiring to the countryside only to find their peacefull idylic shattered by regular gunfire (something they did not research on their day trip house hunting forays), they did not reralise that this goes on in the countryside but because it disturbs their vision of country living they want it stopped.
I am afraid that the noise police listen more to these invaders then they do to the locals to whom shooting is a normal practice
Noise abatement orders have no boundaries and can be slapped on a private individual on his own private property if it is deemed to spoil someone elses amenity.
Hence i use a moderator on all my rfiles, i hate the things, i have two very nice custom builds the lines of which are spoiled by these awful muzzle attachments but i value the continuance of my sport more then not to use one.

Maybe they should F@~k off back to the city and stop causing trouble and driving house prices up then!!

Gunfire IS part of the country, as are tractors, ploughs, that smell when the slurry tank goes past and the sight of 14" of flood lit combine coming at you at 3am on a country road

should they all be muzzled and move silently to pacify the crumblies?!

Some on here would argue with my earlier comment :cuckoo:

Take from someone older and who has had the experience. Don't f*** with your ears. Mine ring all the time and i have much worse hearing in my right ear due to shotgunning when I was a teenager (tissue wedged in your ear was obviously no good). It also didnt help that I used to listen to Stiff Little Fingers full blast and went to loads of concerts. For the sake of your future hearing, take steps to protect it. Bravado will catch up with you

Just my ha'penneth, but been there done it and am approaching the hearing aid

I hate the mod on my rifle with a passion but would never go back. If I am ever close to a centre fire going off I am left with dull hearing for a number of hours after, so have kind of taken that as a warning. Dont think I could ever be arsed with ear defenders in the field (always use them when zeroing etc though).

For the same reason i dont enjoy rough shooting anymore. Maybe need to invest in some decent digital defenders.

However, I have been seriously considering taking the bi-pod off for sometime as I also hate the flippin' thing digging in and cant remember the last time I shot a deer off it.

It's also part of city life too - along with exploding hand grenades.

It must take a hell of a long time to combine an acre with a 14 inch cutter bar? :-D

Bewsh, you make it sound like i am condoning city folk retiring to the country, on the contrary mate but it is a real fact and nothing we can do about it.
They have money and they have clout, combine this with overzealous council noise abatement officers only too willing to hand out an order and you will see there is a growing problem

+1 you are 100% correct Ian our club is now wondering if land at the rear is developped that the shooting activities will be under threat. Minsterley Ranges in Shropshire suffered from an influx of townies and now has serious restrictions imposed there. So for all these on here that think that they are going to carry on as in the good old days them think again the shooting world as it was has had its day and if we are to continue then we must adapt to change. I have personally had eperience of townie anti's calling dibble to me as they did not like the idea of crop protection and me shooting Pigeons. Also out lamping at night thats why i also recommend the use of a moderator as well as the prime reason for using one HEARING PROTECTION.

Jimbo

I know what you mean Jimbo, i am a menber at minsterley and have seen the changes come in.
A local very well established commercial clay ground only shoots om 1 1/2 days a week, they put in for planning to build 10m high banking so they could shoot an extra day but this was refused because of local pressure, even though it was pointed out that would actually be quieter!!
A noise abatement order was slapped on a scramble track reducing its operating days from 1 a month to 4 a year, needless to say it is now closed down.
This is just the thin end of the wedge.

Ian.
