Moderator Test

I know another moderator post. However, with mods coming off ticket, now seems like a great opportunity to objectively test moderators against each other.

We have heard for years from manufacturers and dealers that a certain moderator is much quieter than the other, only to discover that they say this because it is what they stock. We have had no easy way of objectively testing these claims and often have to settle for biased opinions.

Assuming that moderators can now be posted, surely we can get together to organise some actual testing under controlled conditions? I suggest the person testing has no ulterior motive to sell any.

Members could send their moderator to a specific individual for a few days who uses the same rifle, load, barrel length etc with the same recording equipment in the same place to measure noise reduction. This data would then be very clear for all to see.

I am happy to try and organise, but I don't have specialist recording equipment that someone on here might? I could try and find or rent some if needed.

They would need to be the same thread, but given the size of the community on here, I don't think they should be too difficult to source.

For example, a 6.5 18x1 moderator in as many different models as we can muster.

If this is of interest please let me know below. It would also be useful to know which moderator you have if you would be willing to post it. We could then draw up a list.

Because of all the different threads, calibers, environments etc, I think the best test would be rifle on a bench, one mic 4m left and 4m forward, second mic 4m left and 30m forward of the muzzle, then the rifle fired without mod and with mod.

It would show actual noise reduction from a known volume, within the exact same environment. I would look at the actual spike on the waveform, so no echo or sound reflections are taken into account.

Would be interesting to 'hear' the results!
