Moderator

Hi all, suggestions please for 223 moderator
Regards tony

There are a number of 'depends' to that question.

is it weight that you want 'not a lot of' or doesn't that matter ?
Is it 'noise reduction' you value most ?
Length in front of the barrel ?
Amount of barrel available to slide the vertex style moderator over ?
What sort of cleaning regime do you envisage, do you want a moderator that breaks down into pieces or one that is sealed ?
Do you want one that you can add additional baffles too or change the bridge so that you can use it on different rifles ?
How much radial clearance do you want between the moderators bore and the bullets diameter ?
How big (or slim) do you want the moderator to be ....
Is this for range use or field ?

What about cost ?

Hi quietness is what I’m looking for, sealed moderator it’s for range and field slim build
Regards tony

Get a DPT they’re the best I’ve found at compromising all the various characteristics, they may not be the quietest, lightest, smallest etc on the market but they are the best when averaged out across all factors.

If your specifically after noise reduction make sure you get a .22 centre fire and you’ll be fine. Also baffles are replaceable so no need to worry about out shooting it.

Quieter moderators need larger internal volumes as well as well designed baffles.
A big fat moderator will always be quieter than a slimmer version.
Adding additional baffles (and volume) suppresses and cools the expanding gasses so they are quieter but (by design) means they are strippable.
Light wieght uses alluminium or titanium, titanium doesn't 'gas cut' as much as alluminium and so (like stainless steel) is better suited for range work.

Similat to @Wmjas I like the DPT range.
You can get a stainless steel baffle.
Extra baffles to increase the suppression.
Good customer service/support too.

Go for a 20cal 'over barrel'.

The Wildcat moderators are good too, have a look at the Elite or the Elite Ti

Lawrence precision - another good make.

What is the diameter of a 20cal bullet ?
What is the diameter of a 223 cal bullet ?

What is the diameter of the bore running through your moderator ?

Ignoring what it says on the outside of the can (or box) you need to check these things. To be sure.
I like a close fit as this in itself increases suppression..
I use a 20cal mod on my .22 rimfire, my .223 and my .22-250 (Bore = 6.35mm .25") - 5 baffles + stainless
I use a .243 (6mm) mod on my .257 (Bore = 7.2mm .284") - 6 baffles + stainless

PS
Am looking for some additional Mk120cal baffles if anyone has some spare/is selling ??
