Looking for a new winter jacket had a few down jackets but don’t really wear very well especially once washed.

Has anyone any experience with any of these options with fit and quality.

Will be use for everyday and on the hill.

Thanks

I've had several Montanes over about 18 years, awesome jackets.
They are warm (can be too warm but they are easy to vent), they dry quicky and are hard wearing.
Quality of material and stitching has never been an issue and I'd say the sizing is accurate. I'm 5'8" 11st and nicely fit a medium.

Ditto, I found them more robust than the other, nicer finish

I have two of the arktis ones, the older model fits better but the newer one is more robust, it may possibly feel better once worn in. I also have the military micro fleece version, not as warm as the pile lining, but it does pack small, I can fit it in the pocket of my rifle bag. I find the pocket on the front very useful to stop bino swing

Had / have both.

They are very similar. Both excellent products.

However Montane extreme stock is simply better. Montane comes with a hood as standard, buffalo doesn’t. Montane comes with reinforcements on areas such as elbows which is useful when crawling as the pertex outer is really easier punctured. The fit and cut is much better.

While the buffalo has a longer rear, and protects the bum and keeps it warm when sitting down (which is nice), equally when raining water tends to pool and soak your rear rather than running off.

Extreme smock used to be cheaper too. Also comes with a useless crotch wind strap.

You can’t go wrong with either. But montane gets my vote.

*Keela also make very similar product however doesn’t use pile, uses synthetic insulation. All have there pros and cons. Atrkis stuff isn’t as good as it used to be and simply hasn’t kept up with competition over the years.

I contacted them about making bino harnesses and clothing for stalking and shooting, suggesting there was a good market for it, they have so many police/military contracts its just not worth it for them. I do agree with you on the quality, the fit of garments doesn't seem as good or comfortable as it used to be, or maybe its just me entering middle age that is the issue

I've had and still have both. Buffalo mountain shirt gets my vote. Slightly shorter than the special 6. Fits a bit snugger in the arms and body than the Montane which I think helps it do what pile/pertex does best to keep you warm when the weather's lousy. HH base layer t shirt underneath as it feels wrong without. And made in the UK. What's not to like about that?

Like others, I really rate the Montane Extreme garments - I have 2 smocks and a jacket.

That said, you may struggle to find a new one. I have a feeling that they may have stopped making them which would be unfortunate.

Ive got both (several Buffalo’s) and love them. I like the cut and pockets of the Montane better but both are quality. You can get away with just a thin base layer in all but the most extreme weather, occasionally I’ve put a wind proof over the top when it’s been really bad.
