Moss killer

I see from a couple of other threads we have some knowledgeable agrochem specialists on the site

I have a large tarmacced yard (around 800 sq yds) that in the last couple of years has started to get covered in moss Last year I had it jet washed off but its been coming back

So I am looking for a spray I can use on it to ideally to kill it all off and keep at bay from time to time.

Only slight issue I have is it drains into a pond I have about 200 yards off with trout, aquatic plants etc in it so needs to be safe enough for that

Assume I administer spray in Spring?

help appreciated

Have you the appropriate pa1-6 ticket for spraying with the W bit ??

if so get online to the uk pesticides guide they have the most up to date on moss removal chemicals and the safe use particularly near drains and water.

you will have to have an account and show your credentials to get the correct chemical from a agri store, read the label it will outline the correct chemicals for best time and procedures on applying correct safe dosage per square metre pro rata

if you do treat, make sure you adhere to the label and your RAMS make a record of Pro - rata chemicals used amounts and calibration of your applicator and keep it safe just in casey

if you haven't got the PA 1-6 with the water part included, my advice would be to leave it well alone and contact a professional company just in case of a disaster

sorry to be a bit clinical about it but chemicals and pond water definitely don't mix big time

cheers

I work in a Garden Centre.....there are a few products out there that "joe bloggs" can purchase without any special licences. Bayer do a "path and patio cleaner". There will be some elbow grease required after use though ( it will die but not dissapear) and repeat applications may be neccesarry. Also a product called patio magic which is also very good...cant remember who makes it at the moment but can check tomorrow. Both products will be harmfull to aquatic life if a water source in contaminated so apply on a still, dry day and ensure it wont drain directly into your pond.

Gallup 360 is an excellent weedkiller and will easily deal with your moss problem.
Best to wait until a good dry late spring day when the moss has starting growing again before spraying.
Gallup also sell a variation which is aquatic friendly.

I've used it extensively and rate it highly.

It's a good weedkiller but being glyphosate based, wont do much with moss.

To be honest you're going to struggle. Anything 1/2 decent at killing the moss will harm aquatic life. I guess the moss is there because the area is shaded & damp? Could trees etc be removed to allow more sunlight in or could other drainage be put in to drain away from the pond?
Failing that I think regular jet wash is your best option. Possibly try to seal like they do with block driveways but not sure how that will work on tarmac

Gallop 360 is broadleaf and grass controller not moss, it has acute and very long lasting effect on aquatics and water/ pond based plants

I would recommend you contact a professional moss control company for advise on specific moss control chemicals that are organic with no residual properties and aquatic safe

Correct won’t touch stubborn moss liquid iron then scarification wether hard or grass surface it is the Bain of my life on tennis courts and Astro turf Mmc pro is ok but iron for me

If you look up a company called chemigro

ChemiGro

They are specialists in control of specific weeds / plants and very helpful on the phone

I like moss.. I always let it grow. its a good sign of a healthy environment, however.. raise the PH of the location by applying lime. should keep moss at bay. also mor moss to grow there must be a lot of water so divert the run off in the area and drain it better.

Yes certainly glyphosate based, and used extensively in forestry (where I use it) I went through quite a few tubs of it from May until September. I can assure you it kills moss, as I used it on exactly that during the summer whilst clearing a large yard which was thick with it. As yet it continues to remain moss free so unless the moss killing fairy is visiting in my absence it's fair to assume it was the Gallup360 that killed it.

SOPP (Sodium2 Phenol Phenoxide) was the go to moss killer and its cheep

We had a client in Ireland who baught a fire engine and filled it up with dilute of SOPP and used to go round doing moss treatments on slate roofs

Trouble is, its a marine pollutant so youd need to block the drain and let it disperse to soil.

Biox is expensive but works well and is non toxic. Don't be put off by the product usage, we use this for moss and lichens in sensitive areas

Boracol10 RH is another expensive but good product with minimal environm, ental impact.

Boracol • Wooden/Teak Deck Cleaner • Patio Cleaner

Or as said just jet wash it

To stop it coming back jet wash it and apply sealent is the only way

ALL the chemicals will wash off quickly.

Iron sulphate is by far the cheapest and one of the most effective ways to control moss, it comes in a powder form which you can either spread on or dilute in a watering can or sprayer.
