Most reliable ?

Looks like I will have to be buying a new motor regretfully so the question is which way to go as I’ve been totally ****ed off with the expense and unreliability of the present Hyundai Terracan. The budget is only £8000 and the vehicle needs to have some space so a Suzuki is really out of the question. I am therefore looking at L200 Isuzu or possibly an X Trail as that’s about the only mid size that will give me space for everything I need it for. Sorry this has been done probably a million times but all advice from any owners or mechanics will be gratefully received to point me in the right direction as I’m truly hacked with chucking money away.

My friend is selling her Nissan Navara. It has been a family vehicle, never seen off road use, double cab, has the Nissan hard top thing and is in basically excellent condition. It is '15 reg and has 60k on the clock, full history and recently had the Nissan underseal treatment stuff on warranty to ensure longevity.

It is more than you want to spend, I think she wants £11.5k for it (no VAT) but I doubt there would be many better examples out there. It has had an incredibly easy life.

Well in 30k miles the power steering went brake reservoir went fuel injectors went fuel sender went brake cable + discs replaced constant 4 wheel drive issues break warning light issues and now an electric fault which is proving to be a nightmare.

Thanks for the pointer but out of budget I’m afraid.
 
If budget is tight but you want the reliability of a brand new vehicle then look at contract hire options. Mitsubishi L200 seems to be the best deal available. I've been doing it for a while now, and wouldn't go back to buying a 4x4.
Easy to budget for regular payments of a couple of hundred quid a month, all tax deductable, no road tax to pay, and drive away in a brand new vehicle every 2 - 3 years. What's not to like?
 
Had a Tata Xenon doublecab pickup now for 3 years bought it used at 35K kms now 87K kms no issues so far and they cost new £14-15K.
 
Not sure how a Skoda yeti compares in size but mine has been faultless.I have the 1.6 diesel green line and am getting 58_65 miles a gallon, the back seats can be fully removed easily if your looking for a big boot although just folded flat is enough

Just be careful of the 2.2D4D.
We have one. Head gasket went. Luckily Toyota put a new engine in.
There are known issues so they put new ones in for vehicles up to 7 years old and 100k.
Luckily ours was 6 1/2 years and 96k phew.

It's now on 158k and no problems. Nearly 50 mpg
 
You should be able to buy a nice XTrail for that money, I have a 57 (first of the "T31" model) with 178k miles on, which I've owned for a few years. It had about 135k on when I bought it, I think, but 8 grand will get you a lower mileage version. Mine is top spec Aventura Explorer, which I think was called Tekna in later years. They're lovely cars to drive and very capable off road too.
The only issues I've had beyond normal wear and tear have been with the EGR valve. This went at around 140k and I had an independent local firm sort it out. It took a while and a few repeat visits before they discovered that the boost pressure sensor had also died, which he speculated could have been linked to the failed EGR valve. A disappointingly short time later the EGR valve failed again and I took it to a main dealer who rectified it. Fine ever since!

I would be happy buying the same again.

As a shoot bus going off-road .... Dings scratches
Towing? And then interior deer in back ... ok can keep clean ish ....

What’s terms for returning it and how much you lose for “ condition “?

I budgeted for up to £1,500 of penalties based on dings, scrapes etc, but in the end, for the last one I took back, they charged about £60 for dilapidation. It had one cracked rear light, a nasty dent just below the rear light (which I'd tapped out as best I could and touched up), a small ding in the tailgate and a large area of paint rubbed off in the loadbed (which I had also touched up). I had had the vehicle for two years @ £198 per month, and used it for all rough farm work, towing, stalking etc.
 
#1 for a Skoda Yeti. 4 years in, average just short of 50 mpg and you can get 2 hinds and a calf in the boot without putting the seats down. Just.....
