Mountain scopes

Only you can tell, it depends on your eyes, and realistically, how far are you happy to shoot ?

I’m sure all of these scopes are up to the job.
Probably most shots will be taken within 250m, but with the possibility of shooting up to 350m.

I don’t use it in the mountains. But do use it somewhere where I have to walk a lot. Absolutely love it. Far lighter than my PMII and better visual clarity.

I don’t have graticules for hood over or turrets but the scope is ace.
I have this one on a driven boar rifle (bought second hand on this forum actually!) but find it a little wasted for that purpose - great scope. Might end up recycling it for this mountain rifle and put an older 1.24-4 Habicht on the driven one.

I now have the opportunity to get a Z5i 3.5-18x44 BT P from a friend in the US for about the same price as the Leica Amplus 6 3-18x44. The Z5s are discontinued in Europe but to not cannibalise their sales of Z6/8 in the US Swaro offers it in a 1inch tube. Light transmission of 90%+. Swaro have confirmed the scope would still bear the 10 years warranty. Z5i comes with Plex or 4W illuminated reticle.

What would you guys go for?

+1 for the Z5i 3.5-18x44 BT P its a fantastic scope, as stated its sadly and frustratingly not available on the European market.
interesting regarding the warranty that's good to know.

Glendine.

Yep, here is their response:

“The warranty runs with the device.
A worldwide warranty/goodwill for defects in material and/or workmanship is guaranteed for 10 years on presentation of a valid invoice or guarantee certificate.”

Amongst the various scopes I own there is one Z6 2.5-15×44 BT and six Z5 3.5-18x44 BT scopes. Optically the Z6 is superior to the Z5s but I really do miss those three extra magnification numbers at the top end. None of my scopes have illumination and all of them are standard Plex reticles.

Swaro Z6i or also consider the S&B Polar 4-16x56, simply the best I have owned in 35 years of stalking, as mentioned elsewhere for mountains it's a balance of weight versus durability and they are conflicting factors often. Since I bought a Vorn rucksack I can carry more weight in the rifle/scope combo without noticing it, I'd recommend looking at a Vorn for mountain hunting. If nothing else is means you carry the emergency equipment I never used to when relying on pockets

Consider March as an option....
They are very light weight, have the option of Illuminated reticles, one of the most consistent low profile turrets out.

They have a massive mag range- 1.5-15x42 or 2.5-25x42mm or 52mm, or lastly 8-80 (ideal spotting scope if required at distance)

FYI I’ve spoken to Swaro about their Z5 and they just couldn’t be brought to say anything positive (or negative) about it at all. They only shared technical data and kept saying the scope wasn’t comparable to other models in their line-up. I asked if the lenses and coating were similar to Z6 and they just didn’t say anything other that it can’t be compared. Slightly off putting to be honest..!

Probably good marketing as they want people to focus on their more expensive lines, fact is they can’t compete with some cheaper scope manufacturers in the US, but have much more of a monopoly in Europe.

Is it a case of "can't compete" or about cost of importing to the USA and traditionally the USA seemed to want very cheap budget scopes, having spent a lot of time out there it seems that was the case, even my relatives in Canada don't spend half as much as we seem to on kit and optics.
No experience with Z5 but the Z6 range are superb and somewhere Youtube? a poster visited Swaro factory and some revealing stuff worth a look, also Z6 & Z8 always been rumoured same quality glass and my findings were that and went for Z6 as use to a big saving over the Z8 range yes there might be benefits but were not enough for the big price difference.

Lots of choice's and have a proper look through them all as everyones eyes are different my eyes work with Swaro and not so well with Zeiss or S&B.

Actually....I've just been at the S&B reps house and had a feel of 3-18x42 META, that would be a perfect mountain scope, a fraction of the weight of the Polar

yes that might well be actually. At the end of the day i think i'll recycle a Z8i 1.7-13.3x42 i have on a driven rifle (wasted for that purpose) and put it on my mountain rifle. With the saved money i'll probably get myself a nice spotting scope and so game ID wont be an issue.

I've just got arken EPL4 4-16x44 vhr recticle. First impressions are good 👍 unbelievably light compared to the atacr I have and not alot of money

For hills you don’t need an iliuminated scope. Save your money there.
I have a 3-9x42 Z3 brilliant light weight scope
