Muntjac Doe - Pancreas

Had an unusual one today. Shot a pregnant young doe, with twin foetus.

All the lymph nodes seemed ok and no issues with tongue or feet.

The only odd thing was the pancreas which was grey in colour, whitish dots over surface but was brittle. The texture inside was firm and aerated.

Never come across this before. So before I butcher anyone have any ideas?

See above, an expensive day out!

I will also add the only lymph nodes that were visible were the portal, gastric, mesentric and those in the head

ETA: pancreas was better described as fiberous and snapped when bent back
 
If it snapped when bent that suggests it’s calcified, as a response to long standing inflammation. Not something I’ve seen, but the medical other half says it’s not unusual in chronic pancreatitis. If the doe was in good condition and all the nodes were OK AND the carcass set properly, then good to eat.

I don’t want to insult you, but are you sure you were looking at the pancreas?

I only ask because I have seen a fair number of people think that the spleen was something else - sometimes the liver, sometimes the pancreas, and sometimes something else. What you’re describing does fit the spleen quite well.

Culled so many that I wouldn't have a clue how many I have shot. I'm a member of 3 groups that obviously shoot a thousands and yet I'm yet to hear of anyone previously saying that they have shot a munty doe with twins. Most phones these days would also easily survive a dip in a puddle too. Therefore, I'm sorry but I'm getting a niff of something unpleasant!

Why would you feel that I have misled you? I have nothing to gain other than to find out what the potential issue is and whether to put it into the freezer. As for the phone it was an old iphone and definitely not waterproof, new phone ordered. For clarity the muddy puddle was 6 inches deep and took a while to find the phone. As for twins I opened the sac and there were two foetuses [sp?], naturally I thought they were twins.

Thanks for the response and yes I am sure that the organ was the pancreas. For good measure the spleen was brittle too.

George, you wouldn't be the first to tell a porky pie on here and you certainly won't be the last. You have stated that not only did you shoot a munty doe carrying twins but your phone also dropped in a puddle and stopped working. You didn't bag up the twin foetus and take them home and you haven't placed them somewhere to go back and photograph like I would have done when witnessing such a rare occurrence. The story just doesn't add up to me at all.
One group on has been shooting 200ish munty does for approximately 20 years and lots previously to that but never found one. Whilst VSS has found a post, I have been on here a while and never previously read of someone finding twin munty feotus' either. It's clearly extremely rare without you have made your phone unserviceable through dropping it in a puddle at the same time which is also far from common. Probably more chance of you winning the lottery than the story you describe actually happening. Now, it's possible that you won the lottery too but you have to admit that it would also be unlikely.

Well strangely I did win the lottery, all £3.40 of it. Not quite enough to buy the new phone.

With regards to the foetus, well I can only relay what I have seen. It is your perogative not to believe me as I cannot prove what I have seen, so let's leave as is. I didn't bag the foetus' up because I thought that these things occur sometimes [well read that they do], and to be honest I didn't think I would be called a liar on SD. In addition, the stalking ground is 1.5 hours away, and the high seat 30 mins away from the parking. I have more important things to do with > 5hrs retrieving something that the foxes / badgers would have taken before me getting there.

As for the phone, well again I don't really care if you don't believe what happened, so again let's park it. PS the puddle was at the bottom of the high seat, I'll take a photo next time I am there for your viewing.

You have a right to question what has happened however you have no right to question my credability
 
For people who would like to understand more about the organs and where they are in a deer, I thought this was useful.

Thanks for confirming.

Rather unwell animal then… as to whether or not it’s ok to eat, I’m not sure. If it’s just for me, I go by a sort of sniff test. If I don’t feel comfortable eating it, I don’t. Not hugely scientific, I’m afraid.

I decided to not take the chance and have disposed of it, it is a shame but better safe than ill. Plus there are plenty more where that one came from.

I had one recently where everything just seemed a bit… off. Nothing glaringly obvious - no really inflamed nodes, no obvious wounds or infections. But the colour of the meat looked weird - sort of pale and almost grey in places. And the connective tissue seemed really fragile and easily torn, much more so than usual. It almost seemed the way you’d expect a carcass that’s been left out a bit too warm for a week to be.

I just decided I wasn’t happy with it and binned it.
 
Weirdly I've just shot a muntjac doe, also with twin feotuses (see pics in other thread) and the pancreas (or possibly the spleen, happy to be corrected) looked like this..20240315_185648.webp
