Must Read Books

So having already panic brought a 2 tonne welding table, some steel and arranged to view a 1950’s pillar drill. I have sufficient stuff to be getting on with if I’m quarantined and feel well enough to function.

If however the worst should happen and I’m confined to bed, reading will save my sanity.

This got me to thinking about an SD must read list.

The two sporting books that should grace any book shelves are, in my opinion.

John Buchan’s, John Macnab

Charles St. John’s, The Wild Sports and Natural History of the Highlands of Scotland.

The first is a bread and butter sportsman’s read, the second is an interesting history of sporting Scotland in the mid 1800’s.

What should I add to the pile?

I think that you should throw in some variation to your sporting books. Perhaps a thriller or two if that's your thing. Something by Harlan Coben, Linwood Barclay or Robert Goddard would fit the bill. Maybe look to get some historical books too, something about WW1 or 2 or maybe even some historical novels. There's a few to choose from about The Roman Empire or perhaps The Peninsular War. Simon Scarrow's Wellington and Napoleon trilogy is excellent reading and informative.

One thing worth having is a Kindle, even if you don't normally use one. If you can't get out, you can download books off the internet without even having to wash your hands!

The Buchan series on Richard Hannay and his adventures from Thirty Nine Steps through Greenmantle and Mr Standfast to the last of the series. Far better than the silly Kennethn Moore film or the Powell or another later version with synchronised machine guns in June 1914!

'La Peste' by Albert Camus.

PS what drill did you buy? Any pics?

Welding table or Drill?

Welding table was a 6x4 ish milling machine bed in a frame, perfect for my needs, the drill is a big old Denbigh K1 series 2. Nice big old cast drill with a No2 morse taper.

The K1 is a very nice drill.

I have an Elliott. You can't beat old machinery.

I was looking for something like a Fobco 7/8, but this has turned up locally. It’s in need of a fair amount of cleaning up as it’s been in a damp outbuilding, but not too worried as I want to change the motor from 3 phase to single phase. Might chuck a bigger motor on it, so it’s more like a Fobco 10/8. I’m sure the belt will give before the motor!

Another option is to keep the three-phase motor and wire it via a VFD. You'd then have infinitely variable speed control without sacrificing torque.

Anyway, sorry to derail. Back to books:

'A hunter's wanderings...' by FC Selous is an obvious one for me.

All the rest of the Buchan books.
Also, when you're feeling unwell, there's nothing quite like revisiting some childhood favourites to pick up your spirits. So I would want a full set of the Swallows & Amazons books, together with Treasure Island, Robinson Crusoe, Kidnapped, The Coral Island, etc etc.
