Must Read Books

Safari, by Bartle Bull is an interesting read on the development of the safari from early days. I've no great yearn to go to Africa myself, but found it a very interesting work nonetheless.

Read one of his biographies "Big Game Hunter", Norman Etherington. Hard work but well researched. What a life he had.

The best biography of Selous is Stephen Taylor's 'The Mighty Nimrod', a very well written account. And Selous' best book i think is A Hunter's Wanderings in Africa.

If you're into big game:
A Game Ranger's Note Book is the better of the two.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey.

Of all the books overshadowed by blockbuster Hollywood film versions, few are more worth reading than Kesey's original. It's a minor modern masterpiece streets ahead of the two-a-penny beat generation novels of the time. Kesey was a proper writer head and shoulders above his beat contemporaries. Sharper, cleverer, funnier with a finer command of language and a terrific ear for dialogue. It's a smart, eloquent, funny and constantly entertaining read.

Same goes for Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt.

See how the world has changed in a lifetime, Hunter by John Hunter. A big game hunter eventually employed by the Kenyan government to ‘clear’ areas for settlement by farmers. Killed, culled, shot over a thousand Rhino!!
