You can't be that safety conscious if you consider that it's OK for the rifle to be sloped back at such an angle that it would pose a danger to anyone behind you. Even if you're stalking alone (as per your post #34), a rifle at an angle poses a danger to things at a considerable distance.
(About 3 miles, for a 308 discharged at 45 degrees).
 
Muzzle up pros:
ND wont take your foot off, or your guides, especially important on hard surfaces concrete, rock etc.
Keeps it away from the heather / baby's heads & stops barrel getting plugged in mud
Muzzle up Cons:
Heavy mod &/or bipod lead to it sliding down and flagging your guide
gives away your position over hedges etc
can fill with rain / snow/ debris from trees easily
gets caught on branches & other overhead obstructions

It makes no odds either way getting on sticks quickly providing you practice.
Muzzle up but carried on is argued by PH's as quicker freehand but only really relevant to DG IMO, personally I am quicker to draw muzzle down left side

Why are you preaching. I dont carry the rifle at 45 degrees it's at 90 degrees so stop presuming. I am fully aware that rounds travel a considerable distance thank you.
I am extremely safety conscious as already stated.
 
Rifle muzzle up for me. Each to his own though and a lot depends on the height of the stalker, the length of the rifle and moderator and the terrain. Walking on relatively flat ground compared to climbing a hill makes a difference. One thing that does surprise me is the talk of accidental discharge risks, whether the rifle muzzle is up or down. I only chamber a round when in position about to take a shot so am not relying on a safety when stalking.

I'm not presuming. I was going by what you said in an earlier post. But obviously you don't agree with your own post, which is good to know.

Personally I carry mine muzzle up, with the barrel taped if necessary. But watching other people carrying that way it is quite alarming how the muzzle moves about as the stalker moves about, raises binoculars, bends down, etc. It seems that the muzzle is only pointing in a truly safe direction when the person carrying it is motionless, standing absolutely upright.
Contrary to popular belief I don't know everything, so I don't know the answer to the rifle carrying conundrum. But I do know that muzzles believed to be pointing in a safe direction often aren't.

I have never said I carry the rifle at a 45 degree angle that was you.
If you carry yours muzzle up why are you preaching to others oh wise one ? 🤦‍♂️

Barrels Up Or Down?

I was on a shoot on Saturday and noticed that every gun was carrying their gun barrel down! This obviously wasn’t the first time I’ve seen this but have noticed more and more carrying guns barrel down. I have always carried my shot guns and rifles barrel up reason being when I did a lot of mud...
