Shotgun is broken and pointing down but the question was about rifles.
I cant stand the mod bouncing off my leg when facing down.
It's down to personal choice at the end of the day.

When I stalk alone all the time why would I want to carry a rifle muzzle down and risk blowing my foot off when I can carry it muzzle up with no risk as the muzzle is above my head?
I understand why it would be safer muzzle down in a group but there is still a possibility of the muzzle leaning forwards towards others feet....
I think there is some give and take here and fundamentally comes down to the safety of the individual

I remember reading a few years ago of (I think?) a lady who put her shotgun in its slip at the end of a drive or shoot and whilst in the slip it went off and shot a nearby foot belong to one of the party.
Had she carried it muzzle up it might have been a different outcome.

yes if she had unloaded it as she must have finished to put it in the slip! std practice once finished then unload...
