My guiding season part one

So my season has finished!, well my guest season anyway.

I always think of my season as starting on the first of May and ending the beginning of February give or take a week.

I started this season on the second of May on Roe bucks and had an unremarkable start to the season, but it improved as it went on and I managed to get some people into good strong bucks. One person got great quality in both June and the rut and was a real pleasure to take out Getting up early in June to go stalking is normally a pleasure but, this morning was thick fog, so we waited. As the sun rose the fog lifted and we headed out in the truck, stopping occasionally to spy certain places. We did spy one or two bucks etc but nothing to write about so we headed to a piece of ground where I had two medal quality bucks, one of which I was happy for him to take. However the deer had other ideas and it took a fare while before we spied a cull buck at long range, 1200 yards or so, across perfectly flat ground with rushes in dispersed with grass it would not be easy. Richard said he would take it so we slowly made our way to the buck, some while later we were within 150 yards but could only see the top of its head when he lifted it. Then as if St Hubert granted it the buck stepped onto a small mound and offered a safe shot. We dealt with him and placed him in a place for later retrieval. We carried on our way and did find, or rather bump both strong bucks out of their chosen beds.

In the afternoon we went to another area where I had numerous bucks and we were not long in spying one, again in the open. We stalked this one a little easier due to whin bushes being dotted here and there, we were just getting into range and he vanished into a thick whin bank, however stood no more than 100 yards was another buck against the wall, number two for the day was now being gralloched. I suggested that whilst I took the buck back to the motor, Richard could carry on along the whin bank in a big semi circle towards the car and I would join him if needed. I wasn’t half way to the car when I heard a bang! Followed shortly by another so my instant thought was well he made sure with his second shot? When I got to him, excitedly he told me he had two more a cull buck and a good strong six point .
