Cracking little fish! I’ve caught pike like that - right hard nuts and they’ll go for a pike like themselves and almost as big! What were you fishing for? I like the jig - what else have you caught with it?

Cracking little fish! I’ve caught pike like that - right hard nuts and they’ll go for a pike like themselves and almost as big! What were you fishing for? I like the jig - what else have you caught with it?

There are some big chub on that stretch of river, and, if truth be known, it was them I was targeting. That's a similar rig to what I use for Perch too.

I thought so - weirdly, I caught a big bream in the Warwickshire Avon on a similar jig. Mepps are my go-to chub spinner. Thanks for bringing a smile to the afternoon. I’ll have to travel for pike, now I’m in Devon. Still, Chew and Blagdon are near Ivythorne and Avalon Guns, so I could indulge in shooting and fishing on the same day!

Hard work, mate. Stick with the soft jellies/shads with a big single barbless on braid.

It’s quite a different experience on the fly - they don’t fight that well but it’s a good method for snaggy water from a boat. But hard work as BD says.

Have you tried pike flies using a light spinning rod? The wire trace add enough weight to the fly for reasonable casts and a good river pike is a giggle on light tackle. This one was under my boat on the Avon…
