New 308

I am now looking to add a 308 to the cabinet. I find myself spoilt for choice between the usual tikka offerings.
The new sako 90 finnlite a bergara crest or something different.

Use will be stalking, and possibly some target on occasion.

I am after a 20 inch barrel or smaller, synthetic stock, the 16.5 tikka looks like it may tick all the boxes. However it does not appear to be available in the U.K..

Any recommendations appreciated

I have fondled all of them recently in pursuit of the same decision.

I found the bergaras unbalanced and awkward feeling to hold, I’d worry they’d be more so with a mod and scope etc. The tikka’s of various flavours were all fine, balanced well and had nice actions. The Sako is a step nicer again, and personally I like the flexibility that the magazine design offers to load/unload in the field etc.

Overall I think Sako have pulled a blinder with the new Finnlight - the other 90 models were a lot more expensive than a tikka, so much so it was hard to justify. The finnlight at £1950 ish compares well to the Tikkas, especially as a lot of the tikka models are creeping up to £1500/£1600 in many places.

2nd hand blaser R93 off road £1200
Barrel currently 20" but could be shortened if you wanted.

Did you buy anything yet.
I'm thinking about changing mine too as my current set up is a bit heavy.
I had a look at the sako 90 finnlite and the tikkas at the shooting show.
I liked the finnlite and I also liked the tikka with the green stock and adjustable cheekpiece . Both were stainless fluted and cerakoted.
I also looked at some of the bergaras and liked some of them too but reports are mixed on them so unsure if I would take a chance on one.

A full or semi custom is also an option, at least that way you get to build to your exact specs and budget. Anything on a Rem 700 footprint has a tonne of after market bits. All the factory rifles I’ve ever bought (with one exception) are all in after market stocks - so effectively just a barrelled action. Compare that to a custom in terms of price and performance and see how it shakes out?

Have a look at the Anschutz 1782. Accurate, superb trigger, quick change barrel, well balanced, never be a need for upgrades. Comes in a variety of styles to Suit various tastes.

Perhaps a nice second-hand Super Varmint T3? Unless it has been totally neglected, there's no reason why it won't be a good rifle? If needs, find a second-hand Super Varmint T3 and get it re-barreled. Obviously the Super Varmints are a little heavier, but if you want to use it for range work as well as stalking, the extra weight will help with the recoil.

Super Varmints are great, have one in .243 - a .308 cut down to 18 / 20” would be a very handy rifle
