Bipod recommendations for Sako 85 / 90 (.308)

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen,

I'm going to be looking for a Sako 85 or 90 .308 now my FAC is here, and part of the things I expect to need to buy is a bipod.

I've taken a look on google but in all truth my eyes are starting to swim from all the research I'm doing on optics and bins.

So I am going to take a opportunity and ask if a anyone has any recommendations - it would be most appreciated.

How much will you use it?

I find all my shooting is done using quadsticks and only use a bipod for zeroing so a simple Harris bipod is ideal

Probably similar to you, but "what if" scenarios can overcomplicate when all the research gets involved.

Harris bipods were on my list but I got a little lost in the model and attachment styles. I also took a look at the Spartans, however the magnet attachment made me twitch.

I have an 85m with a knock off Harris bipod on it that cost me £15 years ago. It works absolutely fine but I mainly shoot off sticks too so was thinking about taking it off. I only really use it for zeroing also.id probably be interested in a quick detach one that I can carry in my pocket.

Edited to ask - if I was to use the bipods (seats / laying on top of a high perch) would Harris still be the one to go for?

I haven't used a bipod in the last 25-culls and realised a while ago that I was simply carrying the extra weight of a Harris unnecessarily.

I still couldn't bring myself to dispense with a bipod completely, so have moved over to the Spartan system with the one bipod shared across three rifles.

I think they would take some beating for just occasional use and zeroing. I would always go for a tilting version though so you can keep your rifle straight on uneven ground.

I've an opportunity on some land where I can shoot from a flat raised position down into a valley with a lovely backstop - provided the deer on the land get onboard and sit in the right spot .

Sounds idyllic; then I would personally buy a tilting Harris even waiting to pick one up second hand if budget is an issue, rather than buying a cheap knock-off. "Buy cheap, buy twice", you'll never have issues with a Harris.

Atlas are good and more adjustable than a harris. Used to good effect on clear fell, from high seats and on dead falls trees. Angle and length of legs gives lots of options. Mine has pica rail adaptor and all rifles have rails so easy to swap

Don’t over think it. I’ve had the same Harris bipod since 2009. You don’t need anything fancy.

I think that's it, I'm overthinking it.....

I've stuck a wanted up for a Sako 85/90 so with any luck I can pick one up while I gather the rest of my kit.
and as Tim said

"Buy cheap, buy twice"

I just need to commit to the kit I'm after.

Spartan have their limitations but I’ve long since given up on a heavy, permanently attached Harris. I don’t use a bipod very often, but its handy to have the option of quickly attaching one of the need arises

Spartan - replaced the Harris pretty quickly. Use sticks most of the time but great to have when needed rather than having a tactical lump permanently attached. Harris now on a Tikka CTR, it is great for target/varminting.

Posted repeatedly on here me about my Spartan “ecosystem” - it’s not just a bipod but a gateway to using the adapters on on all rifles with my Blaser sticks, off the bonnet via a suction mount (that there no need to vacuum down), off a tripod with a Davis head and off my quad rest where it provides a shooting rest as well as a carriage device.

How does it attach to your rifle? Did you have to drill a hole in the stock to fit the adaptor?

No, I have a Sako 85 and just removed the front sling stud and replaced it with the Spartan adapter - you can still attach your sling and pop the bipod in when needed.
