New Ground. Potentially.

I have been after a certain bit of land for a while now, about 2 years, thinking about it. They have a fallow problem. Anyhow, I have had a number of conversations with people, and people who know people know me and know the farmer and I have spoken to him a few times with the, must have a conversation at some point.
Anyhow, eventually, I have sorted it out and I am going to meet him this afternoon.

I think there is a good chance I will get it. In his text he said,
“Bring your Rifle”.

that's great news for a Friday! If you get the permission you deserve a beer unless you're out shooting on the new ground tonight

That’s code for bring a pocket full of cash 😉
I doubt it. Not if the farmer has acknowledged that there's a problem, and has specifically asked for help sorting it.
No different from him engaging the services of any other kind of pest controller (moles, rats, etc).
The OP ought to be thinking about how much he should be charging for his services. He might choose to do it for free, in return for keeping the carcasses (which he can of course sell).

Try pinning the landowner to putting the permission to control deer in writing.
That satisfys your insurer and depending on how it's worded, you won't get any surprises down the road.
Heard horror stories of people bumping into each other whilst stalking, both parties thinking they had sole rights because the landowner told them to have a go.
Best of luck with your new endeavours.

Yes, this has happened to me. Lining up on a deer and someone lining up on same deer from directly opposite, perfectly inline. Not something I want to repeat

Once got permission for deer, then found out 5 others did too, 😂 once met a guy in the woods stalking, who the F are you? I’m the guy managing the deer for Brian, or really, I thought I was 😂

Been there, have the chat!

But, sounds awesome if you’ve just landed virgin ground!!!

WELL, that was interesting…….. so, met up with him, got the interrogation, where do you live, how many sheep have you accidentally shot etc etc. anyway, long and short.
He has a lot of land, the majority of it is covered by shooters, both he and his son are keen stalkers, I was wondering what I was doing there at this stage.
He has a spot, 50/60 acres that they don’t get to enough. I was thinking that, this may be a waste of time. Anyhow, he took me there, 10 minute drive on the road and a 10 minute drive on muddy bloody byways, and I only washed the car 2 days ago FFS. You want to see the state of it now, going through muddy puddles, sliding along the track, glad I bought a set of all terrains.
Anyway, we pull up on a headland, and says the deer come out here and here and, I said, oh, theres a fallow there, oh, there is another fallow there, and then the other way, there was 4 roe. Out with the thermal and counted about 10 deer altogether.

He left me to it and I went for a stalk. Got on a nice Roe buck, then remembered, he wasn’t in season, phew, haven’t see a roe in ages, he was followed by 3 does, but they didn’t present, then looked to the right, spotted a muntie buck. On it at 87 yards.
Bang, no flop. Crap, he disappeared in the scrub, how far has he run? Wandered up and down for 10 minutes, thinking, this isn’t a good start. Found him, He had gone about 2 yards, just hidden by the scrub. Phew.

I showed my missus later on the map, and she recognised the wood, she has ridden past it many times and says it is alway got loads of deer.

So, yes, got the ground. It is not exclusive, must phone in when I am going to ensure that there isn’t anyone else on there, I have to confirm when I leave, and I have to let him know what I shoot, but I keep the carcass.
And, it is literally 10 minutes from home, however, I may take my missus car as it doesn’t matter if that gets muddy. Mine is for best.
Happy days.
