New knife

Members - following lots of discussion and reading about those of you with custom knives, I decided a while back that this was a rabbit hole I definitely was not going to dive down. Then, I went to the Stalking Show with one of my stalking friends who happens to be a Gamekeeper. He was in need of anew knife, so many stalls were visited and conversation and specifications talked about (to those custom knife makers who actually spoke to us) and I realised I did actually want a custom knife to complement my stalking set up. And I was also fed up with the Mora needing constant sharpening.
The show revealed to us a number of things about the custom knife market, and we left without placing an order with any of the dealers there.
I’ve been watching a number of you showing off Stuart Mitchell knives, and so the two of us slogged up to Sheffield to meet Stuart and discuss our needs and wants.
What a gent. He couldn’t have been more helpful. We spent over two hours in the workshop discussing profiles and looking at what he had available and what he could actually make us ‘bespoke’. He came up with some ideas we’d not thought of, and it never felt he was trying to push his ideas onto us, more like he was explaining his experience and then we were combining that with our plans.
At the end, a deal was done for two knives to our specifications. These will be working knives rather than cabinet queens, much as some of the handles etc were fantastic, a knife owned by a Gamekeeper has to be first and foremost a working tool.

I will update you as the project comes together, but I cannot recommend Stuart highly enough at this point and I’m very confident the end result will be exactly what we want.

It was a total pleasure, I always love to get potential victims, ermm, clients into the workshop 😂

In all seriousness, it was a pleasure, being able to draw on steel, cut and grind whilst you are around is a great bonus, thank you for making the trip.
You won’t be disappointed with what you get I can assure you! The only slight problem is you will probably order more from him as it becomes a tad addictive! Be warned!
I actually joked about that on the day, this is how they all start.... mwahahahah 😂😂😂

The gateway drug dealer of the knife world you are….. 😂

Some photo’s have arrived of phase 1 of the new knife (actually knives).
Thought you’d like to see them.
The blade shape/profile is our own pattern, so if you don’t like it keep those thoughts to yourselves please. It’s ordered and the deal is done so that’s it !f2337d34-5706-4fbe-8638-59ba13bd9859.webp0ef4db8a-3ab4-443c-aabf-36bcf4e5c9d2.webp38e21bc0-c896-44f8-bc00-3e52770b3d22.webp

The knives are coming along at pace now, and the phots show the current stage. Some personal unique marks have been made on the blades. An option I wasn’t aware of and hadn’t thought about at the start of the process, but once it occurred to me to make it a really personal item I had to do it. I don’t ever intend to sell the knife on - I hope at some stage one of my boys will make it his and use it when I’m no longer here, and the personal mark he’ll understand fully.b7c774aa-5ad5-4bd4-8803-2a83649aa727.webp

Oof.

He does make a rather fine knife.

And also knows how to take a good photo!

And is very much a gentleman.

Bound to have some terrible hidden flaw…

What an elegant knife, it wouldn't be out of place on the dining room table for a Sunday roast of venison, though a six place settings might be expensive🥹

You’ve all seen photos of the knife, but here it is in my hand giving an idea of size and fit.
It handles very well, and it’s very sharp indeed.
I’m looking forward to testing it on the first gralloch of the season. Not long now.

I must say a big ‘thank you’ to Stuart Mitchell. From the start he’s been utterly professional and helpful.

If you’re in the market for a knife - I highly recommend you give him a call.
