New Member from Downunder

Hi all,

I'm a hunter based in the Dunedin/Otago area of the South Island of New Zealand. I'm the proud owner of a 5 month old German Wirehaired Pointer and I enjoy training him as much as I do deerstalking. I'll take the odd pig and goat when I see them, or if a landowner needs some pest control, but my main quarry is deer and there are plenty of them here.
I swear by my .308 with an 18" barrel, and believe that the biggest impediment for 99% of riflemen isn't their lack of a $5,000 scope or the latest and greatest 6.5mm round - it's skillset and trigger time. I carry swarovski binos though, so make of that what you will.

I decided to join because our style of hunting down here is "rough and ready" and not the polished type you tend to have in the UK (correct me if I'm wrong), so I would like to learn something from "the old breed" and make some friends.

Kia Ora - my big regret when I lived & worked in NZ when I was younger was not making the time to get out hunting. Look forward to reading all about your exploits, will be nice to get some tales of proper fieldcraft 👍 (love watching the various content on YouTube)

Welcome to the forum! We have friends in Dunedin and I’m hoping we’re going to get over to the South Island soon. One of your fellow countryman on this forum regularly sends me pics of the north island whilst out hunting, and it looks utterly spectacular! I imagine you’ll notice over here we have smaller species of deer - Roe, Muntjac and CWD which make for a more easy extraction (as well as the larger Fallow, Sika and Red) and generally shorter hunting distances more typical over here.
