New Member Lincoln

Hi all, I've been following this site for a while now and even had my first guided stalk from a recommendation I had seen on here.

I joined North Cotes Butts club around 18 months ago with my partner to take up shooting as a new hobby. We now visit regularly to take part in target shooting and clays.

I got myself a lovely winchester sx3 for clays and a cz457 .22 for plinking with. I've put in a variation for a 6.5 creedmore which has been accepted and I must say I've had an incredibly positive experience with lincolnshire firearms department on both my initial application and subsequent variation. Incredibly quick turnaround on both.

I'm about to purchase a sako s20 hunter in 6.5 creedmore and ideally I'm looking for a long term mentor based around Lincolnshire who can help me learn all there is to deer stalking and that I could join for some stalks.

Kind regards

Dan

Welcome from Meath, don't buy a Sako s20.
6.5 fantastic calibre, but s20 not the best choice., regards.
Thanks for the welcome. I haven't parted with any money yet so open to suggestions. Is there any particular reason for avoiding the S20 or other rifles you'd recommend having a look at instead?

Kind regards
Dan

Welcome, I'm surprised you didn't join Reepham club, North Cotes is a bit of a pain to get to.
Hi Jimbo, many thanks for the welcome.

When we were trying to find somewhere to get started I actually called and emailed all the local clubs at the time and the only one that answered or got back to me was North Cotes.

That being said I cant remember if Reepham was one of those but it does look like a nice spot. We will certainly try give it a go for their 75m range.

Kind regards

Dan

Welcome from another Lincolnshire member! Firearms licensing in the county has improved tenfold in the past 10 years or so. It used to be dreadful but it’s now pretty slick. I just put in a variation for three rifles and it was all done in ~ one week. FYI, if you’re interested in doing your DSC1, BASC runs one near me in Horncastle.

There are plenty of post on here about the S20 for and against - try the search function. I have had one since they were introduced in .308 and it’s a tack driver - the downside is that it’s heavy. That said, it’s done 13 weeks over the years traipsing the hills of Arran accounting for many reds. I tend to use a lightweight Tikka T3X in .270 now but if I’m on a culling job, especially if static, I’ll reach for the S20 with it’s dS or 4k Alpex.

could you send me details about the horncastle dsc1 one please

Welcome. I've just sent you the contact details for the Sunday club at Reepham. If anyone else would like them then feel free to message me.

In case anyone else was interested, there is also a range at Reepham that goes up to 300 meters, but it's not always open if they're doing other activities.

Next one is September by the looks of things:

Many thanks for this. I currently have open slots for .223 .243 .308 and 6.5 Creedmore.

I'm currently thinking Sako S20 Hunter in 6.5 Creedmore and a Tikka in .308.

I have found several posts saying the S20 is a bit heavier and the biggest issue being a round feeding problem which seemed prominent with the early models particularly in 308 and 6.5 Creedmore. Some sites seem to suggest that may have been fixed in later versions of the magazine although its hard to find confirmation for definite. But it does look a lovely rifle and online video reviews seem to speak highly of it.

Thank you very much for this. We've actually just got back from a clay competition at North Cotes which was a lot of fun. I did call a number I'd found online on the way to the club today for Reepham and was told theirs a Saturday Club and Sunday club which seem to be 2 separate entities.

I'll have a look for your dm.

I dont suppose you've tried the Humberside shooting ground at Driffield by any chance? We are also considering giving there a go for the longer 75m range. The 300m one I would certainly be interested in at Reepham once I settle on the next higher calibre rifle.

Thank you very much.

I'll definitely get something penciled into the diary for the DSC course.

Also if you know of anyone offering guided stalks in the area I'd certainly be keen to get some booked in and try to learn and absorb as much as possible and get networking for permissions which seems to be the biggest hurdle.

In regards to the variation, I put one in for the 6.5 Creedmore, I already have empty slots for .223, .243, .308 on my ticket albeit all for target shooting only. But I was told if I do a few more guided stalks and get a letter of recommendation they would open up my ticket for shooting my own rifles with a guide and then progressing to an open ticket once I gain some more practical experience with for example a PDS or DSC1 qualification.

The lovely new officer called me within a week of the application and im just awaiting my FAC to come back in the post.

There's another range half way between Gainsborough and Bawtry, just can't recall the name. Many years ago when we had handguns I used to shoot with Martin Appleton who owns North Cotes as a member of Grimsby club.

Hello, can you send me over the details for this too please? Based in Wragby :)
