New to Deer Stalking

Hi, I am based in Lancashire and currently do a fair amount of shotgun shooting, mainly wildfowling and pigeon shooting. I have unfortunately never been Deer Stalking but would love to get into it. What is the best route to take in order to get my FAC and find permissions to shoot on please?

Welcome.

I would recommend registering for a DSC1 course, especially in absence of permissions or a mentor able to take you out on their land. You will learn a lot, and will be more useful before spending a lot of money booking stalks. Once youve done it, and decided stalking is something you definitely want to pursue, then bang in your FAC application. It might also be worth joining a target shooting club in the interim, learning the application of rifle marksmanship.

Good luck.

Welcome, similar to sgc also like the ducks and pigeons it takes time to find foreshore and fields which have pigeons on

Thanks for the advice, I have just booked a DSC1 with BASC and am looking at joining a local target shooting club.

Watch out for our range days next year. You'll get some great advice
By this he means keep an eye on the 'Events page' on here for BDS range days in Lancashire and Cumbria like these BDS North West Branch Range day, Sunday 25th July, Grayrigg, Cumbria or here North West England - The British Deer Society

We aim to run 4 or 5 range days next year and some other events where you can meet experienced local stalkers.

You have made a good start in joining a target club and booking a Level 1 course but I would strongly recommend getting 'field experience' too by doing as many guided stalks as you can before trying to join a syndicate or seeking a permission of your own.

The nearest estates/guides offering guided stalking to Lancashire are in the South Lakes or, if you have the time it gets cheaper in the Scottish Borders (simple supply and demand economics) PM me if you'd like details of any.

All the best
Nick Jackson
