Hi Guys,

I hunt the same sort of game you do in the UK.
The animal in the picture was imported from the UK but comes from another part of the World.

Does anyone know what it is?

I'm from Christchurch and am just setting up a pig hunt for a visitor from India.
But my favourite animal is the tahr which lives in magnificent scenery.

Well done for those who knew that tahr came from Woburn Abbey to New Zealand in the early 1900s

A Hemitragus bull in the snow tussock

Yep, you're onto it...it's up the Rangitata a few kilometers off what we call the Main Divide.

You can tell in the picture from the large snow tussocks that grow in those mountains.

A New Zealand Chamois Hunt in the Snow

CHAMOIS Hunting. West Coast of South Island

The weather got a bit rugged last weekend...it fined up for the Sunday but there was a heap of powder snow about.
We stopped to do some scanning and a chamois ran past about 50 meters away.
Unfortunately it was too quick for me to get a photo.

This is what they should look at this time of the year.

Dear Thar,

Can you explain the spelling of your name? "Thar".

Over here in New Zealand there had been books written on the difference between the words "tahr" and "thar".

I will let you seeing you are the NZ native expert, I am sure I would get at least some off it arse about face if I were to:-D. I remember it being discussed at great length years ago on Alan’s NZ hunt and fish site.

New Zealand Tahr or Thar Hunting

Thar,

The spelling doesn't matter to me. All that matters is that the tahr are up in our mountains and are great fun to hunt.
(Note: when you come to New Zealand make sure you bring the right rifle.)

...but I've attached a page from my book on tahr which, while pretty boring, gives a summary of the arguments around the spelling.

Cheers.

Thanks for taking the trouble to put that up NZhunting:thumb:, fair chase Tahr hunting ticks a lot of boxes for me. I have enjoyed my trips to NZ after these animals although I have found myself in a tricky situation acouple of times in the mountains pursuing and retrieving them:doh:.

hopefully i will get back there it was a challenging place and one that captured my heart for hunting in the wild we hunted the south up the whataroa river and you are definately alone but what a breathtaking place ,atb wayne

New Zealand tahr on Steep country

The Whataroa is impressive country...I assume that you flew in...but maybe I shouldn't. It's a rugged walk in there.

Under hunting pressure tahr can get into some impressively steep country.

I felt uncomfortable watching this animal...I couldn't see how it was going to get across this cliff.

Unfortunately I couldn't zoom out any more to get a better perspective of the drop...

hi yes we flew in and was dropped off to hunt from buttlers we spent 7 days camping and moved further over from there i have a similar picture of a nice buck looking down from the top of a ridge he was an easy shot but i wouldnt have been able to get to him so he was left i was really impressed how those animals could climb and boy do they have some muscle to them

Thar,

I didn't realise you had hunted tahr...well done. Did you get any pics?

Here you go NZHunting a few photos from trips, the last photo is of the best bull I took 13 5/8” this was quite possibly the hardest stalk I have undertaken, which if you knew me would mean a very very hard for the average stalker. It sits in my living room overlooking me as I type.

Any photos yourself? You must have been on some cracking hunting trips; Oh can you get the NZ dollar devalued a bit? We used to get over 3 NZ $ for the £ now it’s less than 2. Makes coming over very expensive.

Thar,

You have certainly been here and done your apprenticeship...great pics.
Thanks for putting them up.

Your second picture is taken looking down Bush Stream to the Rangitata River in the distance.
The third picture is taken outside the Spur Hut (above the forks of Bush Stream)
The fourth picture is a beautiful trophy and nicely mounted 5 1/2 year old bull.

All very true, as you will know 18 river crossing out from spur hut. You will know Laurie the owner of Mesopotamia station; I have heard that apart from crashing his last chopper that a couple of years ago he sold a lot of the back country to the D.O.C.
