Hi, can anyone advice me on Lamping/calling for foxes, been a few times but i'm sure there's room for improvement !? Thank's..

I shouldn't worry too much at this stage Just, I've been calling foxes for over sixty years and I'm still learning. Practice makes almost perfect, books and vids are fine providing Charlie watches them as well.

Where to start i could go on for ever " just stick at it i use a widgeon call flat brass disc with a hole in middle works a treat just keep flicking the light on and off till one comes into range stay down wind etc if on foot as said previously watch a few videos loads of different ways to do it !!!!

Are you calling by mouth or using a call? try a WAM disc as 375 said, they work well without having to learn much technique. dont blow too hard and stay down wind, call in 5 or 10 min cycles and give it chance, if you have no luck after 20 mins move on. When you spot charlie, use as little lamp as possible just keep the edge of the beam oon it to see what he's doing. try different calls. be quiet some people will call and talk to each other, don't if he is listening to the call he can hear you as well.
if you have neighbors that are calling and missing then you will have no chance. Try and keep something behind you to stop you from getting outlined against the sky.
keep at it it's great when they come thundering in flat out to about 30 yards then twig you are there.

good luck, Ezzy

Thank you lads ! Just ordered some calls over the weekend, and the wam being one of them ! another is from Fox call uk which is having some really good reviews ! don't know if uve any experience of this call !?

I haev a foxpro spitfire which is excellent. However, I do still resport to hand/WAM from time to time especially when Im just on a walk at night. Juts before christmas I spotted a set of eyes, set up gave a few balsts on the WAM and the fox came runnign straight at me full tilt, it was all I could do to get him to stop. Nice piece of kit for the money.

I use both the WAM & the Fox Call UK one, the latter being very easy to use as it leaves both hands free & you can very the pitch just by biting down on it.

Just got both through the post this morning ! The fox call uk one sounds really good, i'm off to try them out this evening just as it's getting dark !

Had a few Barn Owls following me around !!! but the foxes seem to be shying away from every call i do !? Considering i was doing well before Xmas, it's all gone (.)(.) up now !!?? :D

Made a digital caller

I have made my own digital caller for less than £20.

If you want the CD, PM me your address and I will send.

(I apologise for anyone that has asked for one and I have not sent, I will try and get in the post tomorrow, I need to go to the post office anyway)

Cheers

Ross

I have a few different callers but the most effective is a DIY one

They are nothing new & not my idea but here’s how I make mine.

Get 2 Strips of thin wood, about 10 – 15mm wide, you can use lollipop sticks, off cuts of trimmed thin ply, whatever you wish, some even use old clothes pegs but I find they are too thick for altering the pitch with your teeth.

Tape a collar round both the top and bottom sections and at both ends, this will keep the reed material (video tape or cassette tape) from touching the wood and muffling the call.

I use self amalgamating tape for the collars as the reed material sticks well to them when setting I up.

Stretch the reed material tape tightly onto the lower section of the wood, hold in place and squeeze on the top section ensuring the tape material is as tight as possible. (Leaving long tag ends of the reed material and this will help you pull it tight once the two pieces of wood are held together)

The self amalg usually does the business and stops the tape from sliding.

Pinch it at both ends and give it a blow to see how it sounds.

Trial and error with reed material tension will give you an idea of what you need to do.

If the wood you have used is flexible enough then try squeezing at different parts to vary the pitch when you blow, you should now have a tiptop squeak for next to nothing.

Leave an end free if you wish to stick it on a lanyard, helps with hands free calling

I put a final taping of vinyl tape round the self amalg just to finish it off and stop rubbish sticking to the self amalg in the pockets etc

The hardest part if finding a VHS or Cassette tape for your reed material!

Varying the thickness of the reed material can also adjust the pitch too, just trim it with a Stanley blade or similar.

I use it for both day and night calling, here’s the result I had last week during the day.

This one had been very elusive recently but had been killing ducks and chickens frequently so had to go before lambing starts.

Give it a try, it really does work!!

Instead of cassette tape you can use a strip from a laminating pouch.
Make a few callers with varying amounts of strips.
basil.

You could always try the licked damp polystyrene on thr window method works for me time and time again :)
