Nitty Griity bits

Good Morning all,

I am just finishing off scraping and picking all the nitty gritty parts out of a head and coming stuck in the small areas. Is there a solution I can soak the head in that will dissolve the rest?

Or is it a case of carrying on with the scraping and picking?

Thanks

I boiled it for like 45 mins possibly and its just in the inside through all the nose cavities and thing. I plan on using peroxide to whiten it

Hmmm.
First one I did I boiled for an hour - absolute nightmare to finish. Pal said 15 mins max then high pressure hose - brilliant job!

I did this head a couple of weeks ago. Skin head, boil for about 1/2 hour, pressure wash sticking the jet up the nose and in the skull cavity (get sprayed a bit with brain at this point) paint on 12% hydrogen peroxide and I usually leave overnight. Whole process prior to peroxide takes an hour or so.

Very impressive keeping the nose like that with boiling honestly!

But for OP your best doing maceration if you wish to keep a full skull most of the "boilers" are cutting 98% of there deer skulls, Just toss the skull into water with its antlers above the water line and let the bacteria do its job.

This is what I did with my last roe skull. Much easier and no damage than boiling assuming you have outdoor space so not to worry about the smell.

Are you skimming the head and removing as much tissue as possible when macerating?

Or just dump the whole head as removed into the bucket?

We remove the hair (It creates a big sludge pile at the bottom if you dont!) some people also remove the tongue since Its extra meat that isn't needed.

Just dump the water out every week since the bacteria have a short life span, If you happen to have an outdoor area with a plug socket (water proof extension cable?) that's *very* far from any house you could plug in a fish tank heater as well speeds the process from a month or two too a week Its well worth the buy, you can experiment with meat tenderiser powders as well no ones did an extensive test on them yet but from the looks of it it works pretty well.

(Keep in mind your creating flesh eating bacteria by no means handle anything without gloves)
