Always fascinates me, this Police force/service. A force is an organised body of people who exert strength. And here's me thinking that the Police are a public service to catch criminals and those who break the law. Paid for by the public for the public without fear or favour. If I am paying for the Police.it is a service. If I required a force I would employ a couple of big lads.

The Metropolitan Police Service (1829) was brought into the world as a "Service".
It developed (or evolved) into the Metropolitan Police Force, and was widely recognised as such. One incumbent Commissioner 're-badged' it, back into the Metropolitan Police Service.
You could no longer force criminals into the back of a van, you had to 'service' them in...
Not even sure they can do that nowadays.
As far as I am concerned it's a service to the public. Quite easy to Service criminals into vans, use your truncheon to Service their rear orifice.Not even sure they can do that nowadays.
