NRL Hunter UK

Ok let me know when you do buddy

I’m not involved in any organising of NRL Hunter Or any associated courses

I have views on who is and who isn’t suitable to listen to to provide training (I’m very careful with who I trust to deliver training to me) but that’s only my own opinion

It’s up to individuals to make their own decisions

Hopefully the courses will be formally announced soon by NRL Hunter UK and we can plan ahead to be on them

Hello all,

So firstly, shame you won’t be at Orion @Ronin, you and your son will be missed! It was great have him along at the last match! Marc has never been so well looked after on a firing point! He had his own runner!

In respect of the courses, NRL Hunter UK will be running 2 x two day centrefire courses at Otterburn in 2026, the exact dates to follow in the next few weeks but keep late March and early August free for now.

These courses will have no 3rd party involvement and, as a result, will be competitively priced and will NOT be cancelled.

The instructors will be credible, properly qualified and the venue full insured.

The 1st event will be a NRL Hunter Skills Course, with domestic talent included in the team of instructors.

The 2nd event will be an Advanced Hunter Skills Course, following on from the 1st but we plan to have overseas talent included in the team.

On top of this we will be running one day rimfire and one day centrefire Courses which we hope to announce soon. These will be more of introduction courses for newer shooters but I’m sure a lot of people will get something from them.

Both of these are just waiting on signing off some last bits and should be announced soon!

As for the ammunition question, we have been very bold when speaking to Police Forces, Ranges and NGB’s, and our commitment to ‘The Lead Ban’ is clear. We will make every effort to encourage and support our members to make the change over to lead-free ammunition.

It’s one for a podcast/discussion in itself but lead-free options are out there and need some serious consideration, both by large manufacturers and ‘home loaders’.

Products like the copper match solids from Lehigh Defense are a genuine viable option and we are hoping to have some sensible suggestions soon for our members in terms of ready made ammo and components.

As always, this is a discussion we MUST have with you so we need your thoughts on it! So let us have it!

As I keep saying to people ‘Feedback is a gift!”

On the copper point, will the power factor requirements be tweaked? Quite often the copper offerings are a fair bit lighter than lead counterparts, so be interesting to see if PF is bought in line or a copper exemption given.

Look forward to the training. Unfortunate that Modern Day Sniper folks bailed . Seems like they canned all the training in Europe this summer.

And, as I only saw your comment about Brad after I posted my ramblings (it was on the next page), I wanted to add this.

I could not agree with you more @Ronin about the caliber of the instructors (no pun intended)! This was our number one consideration from the off and a position we must never surrender.

You can be reassured to hear that not only am I fortunate to have a good working relationship with people like Brad Bourner, they were the people we were speaking with at the inception of this project.

Our role in this is to create a network of appropriate instructors, across the country, providing a consistent product with every possible safety and legal aspect at the forefront of what we do!

I’ve been quite outspoken in the past on some of the instructing taking place in the UK and my concerns are still very much there!

If someone out there is looking for, or offered instruction then they should be asking that provider the following:

1) What are your instructors qualifications and relevant experience?
2) Is the venue suitable for such training, fully insured and operated in line with firearms legislation?
3) Is the content independently verified and/or accredited?
4) Is the training provided in conjunction with a legitimate training body or legitimate national organisation?

And lastly, but less relevant in some senses:

5) Am I getting value for money or am I being taken advantage of as I am in a position of disadvantage?

Good quality, proper training can cost a lot of money, I won’t deny that. But when average or sub-par training is put on at the same price as what I would call ‘Professional Instruction’ then we have an issue.

There is no ‘going rate’ for training, you should get what you pay for and pay for what you get!

If we need to review our rules as a result of any change to the shooting landscape we will, that’s one for a discussion for sure!

Don’t let me forget @Messy11 👍

Thanks for the detailed reply

Ed is looking forwards to attending the next event we can make (probably this years last one) and we hope to get his FAC as soon as is possible so he can participate

Glad your views on training providers appears to match my own 👍🏻

On the subject of non lead projectiles - there are numerous options out there guys - don’t forget that your VO may be close to range limits if you do choose the lighter projectiles

It may be the case that you look at a “match load” that fits VO, Power Factor and your rifle ,,,

Over the last couple of decades of using solids I’ve found there are some simply stunningly consistent and subsequently accurate non lead bullets out there

You may want to also (NRL Hunter) look at potential deals with Virtus and Yew Tree to support UK companies perhaps

Cutting Edge from the US would be a consideration also - they make some superb products

Keep up the great work 👍🏻

Absolutely! And this is why our Hunter community is key in steering where the sport goes! 👍

How many rounds are being shot at a match? I keep considering it but the mention of lead free kind of puts me off. What's already an expensive day doubles in ammunition alone.

Im not getting in to semantics about the lead ban but 'competing' sounds like it could be a rather expensive do.

Last comp was 80 rounds I think

Price of a 100 bullets maybe 120 for LTS

Match (cup and core ) bullets are up to 120 a box for Berger so the difference isn’t really a great deal

It’s a good way to meet new people and catch up on friends you haven’t seen for years plus enhance your skill set

Cost whilst is an issue - it isn’t a massive increase should the decision be made to enforce a non lead rule

Appreciate the info. I certainly wouldn't be spending for those high end match bullets, my ELD's would have to suffice 😂 im not at a level serious enough to worry about minute differences in bullets like the difference between the ELD/SMK and the likes of them A tip, hence the double the cost came in to it. I doubt I'll ever be at that level either.

Presumably there's no way of temporary lead traps or is that just going to be a pain in the arse?

The cost is everything for some of us, fuel, digs, time off work and the rest of it just to have some expenses double and potentially price us out of making a proper go of it. I shot around 30 yew tree's yesterday whilst doing load development and that nearly brought me to tears 😂

Temporary lead traps won’t be an option unfortunately for a number of a reasons, firstly that the stages are blind and you have to find the target, a trap would give it away. Secondly we move the targets round, sometimes at short notice to accommodate changes in conditions, so that again prohibits traps.

As for cost, we plan to make components available as cheap as possible, perhaps even at cost, if we can and source factory ammo made specifically for our matches (a long story for a beer), both of which will bring the cost down significantly.

Shooting has become very expensive, even the cheaper options, which is a massive shame, all we can do is try to make it as affordable and accessible as possible!

Thanks for the reply. I figured temporary traps would be a no go but dont ask and all... can you keep this post updated ref who's getting on board? If you could get the likes of yew tree or virtus on board with some small discount (couple of weeks ago 2 boxs of yew tree came to £115) it could get more people on board or for us that would find it difficult to justify to ourselves/Mrs or whoever that jump in cost.

When's the next Eskdalemuir match going to be? I'm hoping to attend

My view for what it’s worth is that in the background the Army is chucking lead around in volumes that make our contribution negligible. Furthermore there is a legal framework now set out which gives a grace period. I do not see any benefit to moving to a lead ban prior to the end of that period.

No, we have made no change to accommodate ‘the lead ban’ to date and it won’t be something we rush to do. It needs to be a measured and considered approach with our members front and centre in what we do! 👍
