Well I finally got a response from my MP (Damian Hinds) on this one;
Dear Mr XXX
Thank you for your email. I am sorry to disappoint you but I support this Bill. Serious violence is increasing and the Government has brought forward a multi-strand Serious Violence Strategy to tackle this increase. The Bill is a key part of that Strategy.
I am not a sportsman but I understand that high energy rifles are incredibly powerful weapons that could cause very significant public harm if they were to get into the wrong hands. I am told that these weapons are more powerful than the standard British Army rifles, have a range of several miles and can, with certain ammunition, breach the body armour worn to protect soldiers in combat.
There have been occasions when the weapons to be prohibited by the Bill have fallen into the wrong hands. In one case, the licensed owner of weapons, including a .50 calibre rifle, was involved in the firearms and ammunition supply chain of an organised crime gang in the West Midlands.
I firmly believe that the Government has a duty to safeguard the public and to take action in this area but I am grateful to you for taking the time to write to me to put your view.
Kind regards
Damian Hinds
So in summary ".50 cals are big and scary and due to a fictional what-if scenario I think they should be banned". What a surprise, just toeing the party line...
This sort of response really does show the willful ignorance of the powers that be as well. If the barrier they are setting is "ban anything more powerful than what the Army have" then we might as well kiss our stalking goodbye because even a .243 is running 7-800ft/lb more than an SA80!! As well as shotguns, target rifles etc etc..
Then theres all the usual claptrap about certain ammunition being able to pierce armour, as if they dont know that AP rounds are already illegal...
And the licenced owner of weapons supplying gangs was, I assume, the RFD who was manufacturing all sorts of ammo for gangs but was caught and prosecuted USING LAWS THAT ARE ALREADY IN PLACE! Ergo we dont need yet more laws banning ever increasing swaths of things, we need more coppers on the street to catch scrotes. But that would cost money and be too much like hard work I guess.
I'll be passing his response along to the NRA, BASC, Firearms UK and Mike Lindsay.
