Oh well, I have another one

Was gralloching a deer Sunday, tunnelling the anal cavity, I some how did this to myself. Safe to say, this is probably the worst cut I’ve had while cleaning a carcass. There was so much blood, I thought I hit a vein. I also can’t fully extend a “Thumbs up” so unsure if a hit a tendon/ligament or if it’s just trauma in the area that will heal. Hopefully the latter.

Cleaned with an alcohol wipe and bandaged tightly to stop blood, I stuck on a new latex glove and finished off the deer with one hand.

In A/E that night for some stitches and a tetanus but ended up walking out at 3am. Was told I’d be there most of the night. Went private clinic Monday evening and got sorted.

Curious to hear about other peoples self inflicted injuries so I’ve reference material on the next one!

Regards,

H&B

You were lucky there!
All the best for speedy healing!
When I cut my hand while dealing with a deer just before Christmas I thought, like you, it would be a case of a couple of stitches, a jab, and home by teatime.
No such luck! 4 different hospitals, an operation, and 12 weeks out of action!

Bad luck. I hope it heals well.
I now use cheap cut-resistant gloves under my latex ones. You can still stab yourself quite effectively (!) while wearing them, but they have proved to be a good defence against slashing cuts. It's not uncommon for the total effect of a wayward blade to be no more than a tattered nitryl glove.

Maybe it’s time the various shooting bodies arranged and offered a basic knife handling course, and of course a level 2 beyond..

It never ceases to amaze me how many folk otherwise competent and presumed ‘safe’ with handling a firearm are found lacking same in respect of a knife.

If you ever get cuts like this or smaller, powdered black pepper helps clot the blood quick and it doesn't sting. Just keep putting it on until it forms a clot and then plaster around it. Helpful tip.

After a similar experience I use a Kevlar knit glove under latex on my non dominant hand.

Damn near took my left index finger off at the knuckle whilst working through a pile of rabbits. Dark, raining, tired, rushing to get finished and all it takes is one moments loss of focus.

Amusingly the Kevlar brand is ‘no cry’ - were they watching at the time????

One February Friday aftrenoon. Had a roe doe in the larder but in rush to go roost shooting. Cut a long story short (get it!?) stuck a big butchers knife right in the front of my thigh. Was able to drive myself to the local hospital, no A&E but one of the duty nurses sew me up ‘because she hadn’t done that for a while’, by time she started the local anaesthesitic had worn off so it was an experience never to be forgot.

Got a nice eye shaped hole in my leg as a reminder (there were complications)

Yeah I remember reading about your one. The thumb isn't too sore, which I been told by the doc that, that means its deep. The aftermath of the tetanus injection is wose! Swollen lump and very tender shoulder

Yeah I have kevlar gloves but they are too big to fit under nitrile or latex gloves. I might see if I can source a thinner pair

A bit out of pocket - I guess you've never cut yourself...ever.

Its not a lack of respect/skill. Was using a new knife, and probably rushing to get things done in the heat and with darkness setting it.

Ooof, that sounds nasty! I've a similar eye shaped wound about 3 inches above my kneecap from a wayward stanley blade a few years ago. No hospital, just sterri stripped and covered it up.

Managed to cut myself badly in the larder a few years back......never....ever...try and catch a bloody knife when you're doing the red gralloch....... And especially not when you're on anti-coagulants! We live and learn - sometimes!
Lots of pressure and eventually some steristrips and bandage and good as new!
Get well soon - and yes Tetanus boosters are a PITA!

I was trimming a ewes foot a while ago when she kicked out and caught the hand holding the shears. Sent the blade right into the back of my left hand. Managed to get to the bathroom and ran the cold water on it. I also ended up with a sore chin as I passed out and clobbered the sink on my way down 🙄

I just cracked on rather than heading to A & E, but the lasting pain and nerve damage is the price I pay for that particular piece of stupidity
