Open Ticket Variation (Essex)

FWIW, my FAC was granted for .17HMR and .22 FAC Air, but not the 6.5CM id applied for based on no experience. i went on a talk, took both the pre DCS1 and DCS1 and then applied for the variation, this was 6 months after initial grant. The 6.5CM was granted on an open basis.

I live in Essex, I cannot be sure but factors they may have taken into account was that i had held a SGC for over 40years, combined with a discussions about where i was planning to shoot and specifically we spoke about safety

just move from Essex to Kent they are opening FAC from initial application, little experience necessary apparently.

Simon Hull is the FEO for Essex and I have found him to be very helpful. Give him a call and he can explain exactly what you need to do. PM me if you want his mobile number.

Simply write them a short polite note thanking for them for the review & asking that you retain your current FAC to enable you to purchase ammunition etc & will of course surrender it when they issue the new one.

Hi All,

I've had my FAC for a little over one year. At the initial home visit, I asked for an open ticket but I was told by the FEO that the policy within Essex Police is that a person has to have had their FAC for a minimum of one year before they will "open" it.

Now that it's been a year, I emailed the Essex Police firearms department requesting that condition to be changed due to the fact that in the time I've had my certificate I have gained a couple more permissions on shooting estates and have been asked by two farmers to help with foxes. (I haven't gone to either of these farmers' places yet due to the fact that I'm on a closed ticket).

They've asked me to send my certificate back to them so they can "make an assessment" before even agreeing to it.

My question is; what exactly on my certificate do they need to see in person to assess my suitability to open my ticket? surely they already have access to any information that's on the certificate(?) They also can't give me a timeframe of how long I'll be without it, meaning that I won't be able to buy any ammunition and I wouldn't be able to produce it if I were to be stopped.

I'd be interested to see if anyone else has been through this and been asked the same.

Thanks in advance
Ammunition use, they want to see that you are actually getting out and gaining experience rather than just gaining permissions.

Jumping on this thread my apologies but I have an unrelated question if that's ok..I'm currently living in the Met area with a Shotgun and FAC open ticket with 6 firearms and have had a very happy relationship with the Met upto now but will be possibly moving into Essex if that happens what should I expect from Essex licensing.

IME quick turnaround of an application my 1st took c 6 weeks, variation took me 11 days.

It's rubbish. What if you reload your ammo? . Apart for .22lr entries on my certificate there is nothing relating to CF ammo purchases.
It's a hoop jumping exercise. As long as you have suitable permission send in details and certificate and ask them to open it.!

My experience has been brilliant with them so far. My grant took 19 days from me applying for it to me having it my hand and I had a variation for an FAC air rifle which only took a week. Certainly no complaints from me! I was just curious if this was normal as it seems every FAC holder is told something different
How long ago was this mate? Put in a FAC application with Essex around 1 month ago and waiting to hear back. Not sure how long I would be waiting, it seems Essex are much more prompt than elsewhere.

It was just over a year ago. I dont know if it made a difference but I was renewing my shotgun certificate at the same time, so that may have sped things along
