Most police forces have taken this up which involves dashcam or 'go-pro' footage being 'assessed' for potential traffic offences. I was not aware that a third party video can result in NIPs and find that many cyclists 'going equipped' result now in very large taibacks of drivers unwilling to overtake without a very significant length of road available.
Not only that but motorists who cant be potentially prosecuted for one offence can be prosecuted for any other shown or implied on videos. When did big brother arrive on our roads and why did the police develop it into another 'initiative' ?

I for one welcome any initiative to improve road safety by tackling dangerous/careless driving, which anybody who covers many miles undoubtedly witnesses every day. I followed a concrete wagon the other day who repeatedly veered into the hard shoulder and back over into the middle lane. Twice I hit the horn as he was about to wander into a vehicle that was over taking him. Unfortunately I don't have a dash cam so the stupid **** won't see any consequences this time. Hopefully he won't kill anyone in the future, but at least "big brother" didn't get him...?

About three months ago I submitted some dash cam footage, to West Mercia, showing a very dangerous driving incident, didn't even get an acknowledgement yet alone any progress report/update, did I waste my time and effort?

I witnessed and reported a shooting incident in my village 2 years ago. Saw a lad shoot four shots from a handgun at another car. Police attended, investigated and I’ve heard nothing else since. They only had good descriptions, one full and one partial registration and corroborating evidence so clearly not enough to go on.

This may be one of the most naive posts, I have seen on this site.

Do you think that the CCTV outside your home, cannot be used to prosecute the burglar that has just smashed their way into your home?

"Cyclists 'going equipped'". Really?

"Driver unwilling to overtake without a significant length of road available"? Really?

Would you rather drivers only overtook when there was an "insignificant length of road available"?

Evidence is evidence - it matters not where it comes from.

If it "proves" an offence, then so be it.

I have no issue with it.

If you are doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear.

Film away Big Brother, film away.

Once again you stand out as being a self - opinionated but arrogant contributor, please don't comment if you don't like something that should keep you quiet.

There is nothing the Stasi or Securitate engaged in which would trouble the conscience of the average Chief Constable....except possibly the meticulous record-keeping.

I kind of understand why people feel unhappy about this kind of thing and on a personal level feel that I’d only ever want to report someone who was doing something particularly stupid.

@Stalker1962 has a point though. No one questions the idea that CCTV would be used to catch a burglar yet somehow when it’s someone with a dash/helmet cam filming illegal driving it’s not ‘ok’ for the police to make use of it.

Oh, this is too good to let go.

1) Self-opinionated. Yes I will take that.
2) Arrogant contributor - well OK if you say so.
3) "Please don't comment If you don't like something that should keep you quiet". No clue. I have no clue what that means.

Top tip for the return of serve.

Try not to resort to name-calling - it make you looks foolish and demeans the discourse.

Firstly, I am sorry that your submission was not acknowledged.

Secondly, (and this is not an excuse - this is reality) cut-backs, resources, incidents with "actual victims" will take priority. My guess is that the Force simply does not have the "man-power" to deal with every offence being committed.

With the advent of the iPhone, Dash-Cam, CCTV, (Cyclist helmet-cams), there is "evidence" of offences over and above that which the LEAs can deal with.

It is an uncomfortable truth, but it is the truth.

I use a go pro camera when I am riding the horses on the roads, it definitely makes the cars slow down when passing the horses.

There is inconsiderate driving, dangerous driving, careless driving but no such thing as illegal driving, it's up to the Judge or CPS whether you have committed an offence that is worth
going to court over, a cyclist doesn't have the expertise to decide what you do is not right , and in no way is he/she impartial, and there lies the problem, they all think motorists are dangerous no matter what they do.
It is all too easy to doctor videos, photographs, nowadays, the Police will just give out tickets as they know most people will simply pay the fine, whether they did something or not, a bit like a Police State really.

Isn't it also slightly worrying that as a society we are being encouraged to become individual informers?

While being more than happy with the amount of CCTV, speed cameras, indeed all of the digital surveillance methodology, I am slightly uncomfortable with the idea that neighbours can send in some video over a boundary dispute, or a minor traffic offence (where there is no real negative outcome).

I would rather the police investigate and successfully prosecute really serious crime - murder, rape, that kind of thing - rather than spend time and resources on the low-hanging fruit that actually has little impact on society and its behaviour.

I promise you - so would the Police.

Great. I witness dangerous , aggressive , foolhardy driving every day on country lanes, trunk roads and motorways. I have no problem with these idiots killing themselves but not the innocent people who happen to be in their way.
Tailgating, It seems that no matter that you are driving at or just below the speed limit, some idiot always catches up with you and hangs just off your rear bumper.
I now believe all cars should have the equivalent of "flight Data Recorders" and front and rear dashcams!
