Opinions on cutting and threading a rifle

I have a Tactical Operations rifle in .308. it has a short 18" barrel and will send a 150 grain bullet at 2820 fps. The rifle was threaded for a suppressor, however suppressors are illegal in Canada. But the threads are covered with a thread protector and the whole thing is so exquisitely machined that you cannot tell.

So if you have threads cut on the barrel have it done by someone skilled. And get a proper thread protector so your rifle does not look like crapView attachment 478955
Thats nicely done! I may see if 18” has enough diameter for the threads. I think it will as the sporter on those CZs were pretty hefty.

They are nicer rifles than are often talked about. They unfortunately didn’t last long and many didn’t like just because they weren’t the 550 (I have both) but are nice in their own right and much better than the price I paid for it or the 600s that came after.

I was a bit of a CZ fanboy but with the 550, 557, and 527 all cut there’s not much interest left for me. I do have a number of 457s which I still like a lot.

This whole needing a short barrel on a rifle, I just don’t get. Yet take a shotgun, every one wants 30” barrels, if not more, and keepers are all using 28” barreled semi’s which are long.

A longer barrel gives more velocity and is generally steadier and easier to use. A 20” barreled rifle with a reflex mod will be about 24” overall and shorter than most 28” barreled sxs or ou shotgun. Yet most will happily work through the woods with such a shotgun yet can’t work out how to use a rifle of such a length.

I suppose I am about 6ft tall so a 24 or 26” barreled rifle is nicely balanced.
I suppose it’s just what’s comfortable and what suits purpose. When I think of shotguns I think of standing in a field or a stand. I currently have rifle barrels up to 26” And down to 16 (a 22). I find myself enjoying the balance of something in the overall length of 40” or so. My favorite deer hunting rifle for my area has always been a 30-30 and the weight and length and balance is just great for carrying. It was only recently I started hunting with a 308 and did so primarily because I liked the balance and feel of the rifle and what it could do in the same size as a 30-30. Like everyone else I could probably everything I need to with way less than I have but I like firearms and enjoy seeking perfection for different scenarios. A 26” 308 defeats the whole reason I liked the 308 to begin with.

On the other hand I’m a huge fan of the 6.5x55 and know it takes a longer barrel and am fine with it. Just wouldn’t be my choice to use suppressed in the woods as there are better tools and I’m not limited in the number of choices I can own.

Modern bullet technology and the opportunity to run suppressors has profoundly changed my thinking and preferences for hunting rifles at this point.

I’ve finally decided to purchase a suppressor. Of the dozens of rifles I’ve owned and traded I only have two that are threaded (a 22 LR and a 6.5 Swede). I’d really like to have a short barrel 308 for woods and stand hunting. Both are the most prevalent ways to hunt deer in my area. My 6.5 is a tikka with a 22.5” barrel which is fine for more open country stalking but with a suppressor not ideal for tight quarters.

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about setting up a new rifle with a 16-18” barrel. But got to thinking maybe I could have my CZ 557 sporter cut down a little and threaded. Figure I can put that money toward a suppressor rather than a new rifle and scope. Guess I’m just torn I really like the rifle as is with the 20” heavy sporter barrel, but it wasn’t an expensive rifle or collectible at all, and I think moving forward I’ll use it more if I have it outfitted for a can. Just looking for a little affirmation from the group I guess.

I’m interested in one of the new Sakos in a 308 with a 20” threaded barrel so I could save money here and maybe use and enjoy a rifle I already have more and get a nicer rifle down the road. Thoughts?
My 308 was a 26” heavy barrelled rem700 SPS. Its now a 16” not so heavy barrelled rem700 SPS with an end of barrel dpt mod and I happily knock deer over at 200+m with is using 150gn ECX bullets.
I fitted into an mdt oryx stock and it has a Zulus v2 on it, so it’s my woodland / low light rig.

It dropped more deer this last winter than my other two combined.

How do you like the Oryx? I’ve been interested in one or also maybe “The Worker” model.

It’s fine. The stock is stiff and the slinging points and mag release are fine with both metal and plastic mags.
It’s not an aics but also doesn’t weigh the same.
