Straight Pull Ar15 options

Having shot a few and my observations of fellow club members who have AR15 straight pull conversions, and for that matter SLR conversions is that they are bloody expensive for something that is really not that functional and reliable.

If you want a good reliable tactical style rifle buy one of the many chassis type bolt action rifles now on the market, or indeed a properly designed straight pull such as the steel action in a chassis stock.

The Henry lever action with box mag in 223 may also be worth a look. Getting good reviews in the US, not sure if imported into UK.

I’ve had an SGC Speedmaster before, 20” heavy fluted barrel. Extremely accurate to 600 with Berger 73gn but I was never happy wandering around fields with it for foxing. The AR has a very well known profile and as my foxing overlooks Gatwick I decided discression was the better part of valour and replaced it with a Sako 75 6mm PPC

I thought Fat Bob (SGC) died recently?

I have a SGC straight pull chambered in 5.56, with full uncut upper. It’s just used for plinking, but currently looking for parts to convert it to an M16a1, I even have an original upper lol

Bob from Southern Gun passed away a few months ago. All his guns, spares and machinery were sold to someone else as part of the estate sale.

I had one of his .223 straight pulls

A great gun but was uncomfortable ponsing about the woods looking like a Walt

Once got a patch stuck in the barrel and, as I had no cleaning rod at the time, tried to clear it with the thin end of fishing rod

That broke !

Took it back to Bob with half my garden shed stuck down the barrel

Other than with a gentle raise of the eyebrows he sorted it without fuss or criticism

Have a look at this - i suspect far more fun than a semi auto modified to be a straight pull.

I’ve got a Figure Eleven AR-15 on order after having a go with one at Bisley. At the risk of sounding like their own marketing department, the extractions were incredibly smooth, and they’ll put together a package for you with your choice of lowers, optics, etc if you want.

I can also vouch for the Schmeissers, they've got a fair heritage and I've shot their .223 and 9mm.

I'd still go for an LMT if I was pushing the boat out purely for the legitimate MIL background, but you can't go wrong really.

Lots of folks at one of my local target clubs seem very happy with their Southern Guns.

That Valkyrie fella building with Aero parts sounds very interesting though, I'll have to check that out myself, cheers AM_Lillycombe

Aero have just folded in the US so I wouldn't count on that happening for much longer sadly.

Dave at Valkyrie makes great rifles, but they aren't cheap!

Damn, I hadn't heard that yet and that's a bit of a shame. I know some of their rifles had a few little questions marks over them but it seemed like they slotted in nicely just above the really cheap stuff like PSA and similar. Some of their AR10 style rifles looked nice.

Doesn't matter too much to us here in the UK I guess, but it's always a shame to hear of good companies, or even just companies who are making an effort, going through the ringer.

I'd go aero precision or schmeisser.

The lantac is a decent gun if you can wait 18+ months for it, the guys that run the company have the worst customer service known to man.
That's not me jumping on a band wagon either, I've first hand experience with them

You can say that again. Emails go unanswered for literally months and then they claim never to have received them. Had that on three different occasions with them now. Ended up giving up and buying something else. Shame, because Lantac are lovely guns.

Still seem to be trading, but wouldn't be surprised if they were having some issues. I ordered a 223 rifle last year from them and they just went radio silent. I do have one of their .22RF rifles which is incredibly accurate for an AR.

Another option is to build your own, NWCP apparently can do this, as can Bluefield sports. Would be great to know of any other builders who can source US parts…

Definitely check out the Bluefield sports website, just had a look and they have a number of different .223 AR options
