Optilocks and thread lock... Yes or no.

Hi guys
I will shortly be fitting a set of optilock rings and bases to a tikka T3 in 270 cal. Having not used the two piece optilocks before, I am wondering if I should use a smidgen of blue thread lock to the bolts joining the rings to the bases , the aim being to avoid the possibility of the rings loosening on the bases under recoil. (I have seen this happen before)

I would be be interested to hear your views on this.

yes use thread lock but make sure it is the light grade so the bases can be easily removed

It was my 30-06 bases that came loose just the back one since I've retightened it hasn't moved over 200 rounds thro it since.didn't use locative.

After reading your replies,I think I will be using the 222 tool strength loctite now, to be honest I didn't know the weaker 222 purple loctite existed before this thread.

i had problems with my optilocks coming loose on my .243 and so locktighted them.1000 rounds and 1 year later they are still rock solid.

My only experience is with Loctite 243 (ironically) on motorcycle bolts and the trick is to buy a £2 soldering iron from the ironmongers as heat will release it.

Don't, for the love of god, use the locking compound Sako use on TRG's. I needed to change the factory piccatinny rail for a canted one, only four M3.5 screws. Four hours later......

Needed the barrel removing from the action to sit it in an oven at 120 degrees for a while to get the darned stuff warm enough to remove. Nasty nasty stuff.
I've fitted the new rail with a very small smudge of loctite 243, though this one shouldn't ever need to come off, I know it will if needed.

I too had problems with the base screws coming loose on my (moderated) 30.06.
Since then I used locktite on that one screw underneath and have not had any issues since - they are not easily accessed to check tightness so it makes sense to me.

This stuff Looks like just what is needed! After recommendations from this thread I've used Loctite 222 which I would think is roughly equivalent to what you have found in that you are able to undo screws etc using normal hand tools when needed.
