Out last night.

Sat out till 11.30pm last night in a kanzel (doe box) plus 5 degrees temp over here and shot a young one with my .270 Win 150 gr SST at 90m in front of said kanzel then I drove around to the other side of the field to collect it and there was the fox with an owl already feeding on it showing in the thermal, it seems to have already been given "the last bite". in very good condition it was.

I’ve had two pigeons with the rifle, hadn’t even seen the second one behind, but my late father told me of the time when a covey of partridges struck up and he got nine with one shot. That was back in the day when English greys were in abundance, I don’t think I see nine all year.

Been there done it twice with the .17hmr. Last time caught it with the Pard…

Hmmm
Looks like you may have to take my word for it….

More frustration last night with the foxy trio. Baited up that morning but when I returned the field was full of sodding sheep - anyone know if sheep eat dog nuts? I will know tomorrow….
To add to my pain the first of the pair of my tormentors was just disappearing over the far horizon as I arrived for the 6 o’clock date of doom - stood for an hour waiting for it’s mate which usually follows within a couple of minutes….Soooo a full hour later it appeared - going precisely the opposite direction than usual. Thought I had a chance then the sticks decided to sink further into the mud - perfect timing!

Disgusted and frozen I turned to walk back down the lane and there was another fox walking across the opposite face of the adjacent hill. More frustration and got even colder (800 ft above sea level) so did the sensible thing and went home….

Note the woodcock that the fox showed no interest in either…
Bugger!

I got a nice one a couple of nights ago, 170 yarder off the quad sticks from the bottom of my garden, it made up for the one I thought I had "missed"completely the night before... I walked over to pick it up the next morning, took both the Borders as it was in a rape field, and blow me down they found two of the buggers.. the one I thought I had missed was drilled clean as a whistle, in one side of the ribs and out the other, I never heard a bullet strike and watched a fox run off through the Pard and then followed it with the thermal... must have been another one with it in the rape that I never knew about...
Couple of vixens...

Years ago I was hoping to ambush a roe buck and stood behind a tree when out of the corner of my eye I saw a fox running about 30yds to my right towards some more trees so I just swung on it and pulled the trigger but it just kept running without missing a step into the trees.

I thought I cannot have missed it so I thought there is no deer coming now so off I went to check, I had to go the long way round as there was a stream I had to jump over at the narowest point.
I knew the clump of trees that he was running into so I started there and walked towards where I last shot at him. There he was about 20 yards from where I shot him. Straight through the heart and stone dead. Was I pleased.

Well, tonight I killed two birds with one stone...
I got given a fresh free-range turkey as a thank-you for helping out with the foxes & rats on the units, the pick-up point for the turkey was within a couple of miles of my favourite ratting perm on the pig units, so I thought it would be foolish of me to pass up an opportunity of chewing up some more of those pesky critters... 92 on the rented unit, and another 56 from the home unit, so a grand tally of 148 :), quite an enjoyable evening... the missus has got the hump with another late night :norty:
