Out last night.

Out last night and tonight!
Had a bit of a rushed snap-shot at one last night (excuses in early!) No thump of an impact and once I got to the shot site no sign of anything on the deck. Just hope it was a clean miss and I didn't clip him.
Back to the same perm tonight, two fox had been seen regularly between 7 and 8pm. Got there for half 6 and set up under my fave oak tree in the middle of the big gently sloping field. Had a bit of a surprise at 7.20pm when a random dog walker came through. Flashing blue collar on his lab, he walked within 10m of me under my tree and was oblivious 🤭
7.40pm fox came into the bottom of the field, tracking right to left. Stood still for a broadside from me at 150m. Stayed put under my mighty oak, and 7.50pm fox came into the next field over to the right, gave him a couple of toots with the squeaker and in he came, as he entered my field he got a bit jumpy and headed to the far end. He stopped for that fateful look and the. 204 dropped him smartly where he stood.
Tidy.
Sheep farmer grateful.

Some very pristine sward underfoot there Hammo! why the wellies!!??
Always wellies for me! Warm neoprene pair for winter, and a light thin pair rest of the year.

Years ago I took an old chap out for a night fox session, he had lamped plenty in his day apparently. Poor bugger wore thin canvas boots as it had been a dry day; the heavy dew and long grass soon had his feet soaked.
He made quite a row squelching along.

An hour in overwatch at a bait point proved fruitless. Roast chicken for dinner was more appealing. I moved off and pulled up further down the estate to put my kit away and a final glance over the fields.
I was not disappointed as I spotted a fox mooching in a field a couple of hundred yards away. Quickly up on the sticks I lost it amongst some trees. It appeared and paused looking, presumably, at the IR. job done and 5he dog had a bit of sport.IMG_4955.webp

Out tonight and had a bash with the Rossi underlever. Taped a small torch to the side and tested in the garden could see through the peep sights ok. Once out across the fields though it soon became apparent the torch was not powerful enough!
Fox at about 80m gave some eyeshine but I was not keen on taking the shot without seeing a bit more of him. Let him go on his way.
Knocked down a rabbit at 35m, but that's about the sensible limit with this torch. New red torch on order from Amazon, with a remote on/off switch. Just hope its got a bit more reach.

Also need to sort a sling out, but the Hammo patent paracord temporary one will do for now.

Brilliant.
I've just held a decent torch in my offhand before now and sat the rifle on my wrist.

Government Warning To All Fox Shooters:

Be careful when walking in the dark.
Be vigilant for unseen obstacles like debris from hedge cutting.
Small boughs/branches from trees/hedges could cause a trip hazard, especially when they are lying on trackways.
Always do a risk assessment before venturing out.
'Elf & Safety courses are available soon from shooting orgs...

Stay safe out there, chums.

Out Saturday morning (technically it was still night). I was hoping to have a look for Fallow nice and early then I had time to get somewhere near ready for legal light. No deer to be seen (which isnt rare) and spotted a couple of foxes ...would have been rude not to shoot one so a quick hand squeak and in came the one. Dropped at 80 yards...6.5 Creed and 120 grain copper...nice and environmentally friendly  . Second fox didnt show itself. Headed to the next farm and again no deer so had a nice cup of coffee with the farmer 👍

Decent size dog and No 12
