They didn't on my last home visit (renewal). Just checked that the cabinets were secure. Didn't look at any firearms. The FEO checks the serial number on the home visit, isn't that sufficient?
I acknowledge this is a constant gripe on here, but without experience of DP and designing computer systems you're not aware of what's entailed. I hesitate to use the words 'you don't know what you're talking about' because A) that's cheeky & disrespectful, and B) it's difficult for non-IT people to grasp the technical implications of providing info which (admittedly) is already on file.Currently on renewal I have to list the firearms I own and which the Police know about. That wastes both parties time, the renewal paper or electronic could so easily be repopulated with a lot of the data to improve efficiency.
That's an interesting explanation and perhaps identifies where we need improvement in the licening procedure.I acknowledge this is a constant gripe on here, but without experience of DP and designing computer systems you're not aware of what's entailed. The SOHRS online application package is a stand-alone dumb system remote from NFLMS. It is not linked to NFLMS or the PNC in real time. It's deliberately designed that way for security reasons, and minimum cost. That's justified, as the 1968 Act says new applicants, and renewal applicants have to supply exactly the same details from A-Z no matter how repetetive that may be. There is no difference between them under the law. That's plain if you read the wording on the forms and information prescribed under the Act.![]()
Not really. A computerised licensing system is functionally much superior to a paper-based shambles. Whereas there is no alternative to lead ammunition which is functionally superior.Could say the same about lead...![]()
I don't think it's anything to do with being elderly, it's how much you have used computers in your life? I know people far older than myself who are incredibly computer literate, likewise I am bloody hopeless, have never played a computer game in my life, I did the absolute basics at work before I retired, I have had to go onto QuickBooks for my own business, my partner does it all for me, I found it impossible to get my head around. I'm not an idiot, it just boors me and to be honest frightens me, some of you will think it pathetic but if we were all the same ( as the police/government believe) it would be a boring old world. Just to put a final bit of perspective, I own a thermal scope for my air rifle, brilliant bit of kit, a mate set it up for me, I've never touched the buttons since, and hopefully never will, whilst he was setting it up I felled and logged a tree for him as he couldn't get his chainsaw to workAnd so it continues to rumble on - even the Beeb have picked it up….
'The online system for a gun licence is just too hard to use' Digital gun licence system in NI 'too difficult' for elderly
Couldn't agree more R but my thread intentionally focussed specifically on the elderly and followed a mini-campaign I was waging against the monstrosity that's Firearms Licensing in NI. One incidentally that has now been picked up by local councils, the Equality Commissioner and of course the Beeb…I don't think it's anything to do with being elderly, it's how much you have used computers in your life? If you can get the beeb to highlight what they perceive a slight against they're core audience, they might not even notice they're sticking up for shootingCouldn't agree more R but my thread intentionally focussed specifically on the elderly and followed a mini-campaign I was waging against the monstrosity that's Firearms Licensing in NI. Its by no means clear what useful purpose repeating the same info ad nauseum serves other than to enable FLDs to use bone idle unskilled layabouts to process new applications and renewals?I acknowledge this is a constant gripe on here, but without experience of DP and designing computer systems you're not aware of what's entailed. May I, dare I, even mention fit for purpose? Its by no means clear what useful purpose repeating the same info ad nauseum serves other than to enable FLDs to use bone idle unskilled layabouts to process new applications and renewals?
It's not a digital license. It's an online application, variation or regrant. You are still sent your paper fac.Question with a digital license how do you do a private sale?
Indeed but much, much longer and later than the 8 weeks you are given to apply before you have a knock on the door…..It's not a digital license. It's an online application, variation or regrant. You are still sent your paper fac.
True. I hear that with the recent upgrade and now having to create an account via the psni portal the form is pre populated with your details and firearms?Indeed but much, much longer and later than the 8 weeks you are given to apply before you have a knock on the door…..
