If only more members realised that this is the ideal platform to build a ripper stalking rifle.
What would you change on it John? Trigger can be upgraded I think, assume if it shoots well the barrel is good? Nice stock could be made with pillar bedding etc I guess.

Genuinely interested on what you would use and what you would upgrade

Thanks
ES

That depends on how much money is at hand to spend. For starters it could be fitted with a xxxxx Turk etc at a monster cost.
As it is it would do me as a hunting rifle and I would feel comfortable walking the bush with it.
However i am a fan of synthetic rifle stocks and have quite a few of them on sambar rifles (wet winter weather hunting helps this choice) and properly bedded/fitted that the rifle will shoot better. Synthetic in the traditional classic style not the modern pseudo half pie warrior look stocks. There are many syn stocks about today to choose from and for me my go to are Bell and Carlson stocks, some have to have higher end pricey Macs or HS (or others) but after having B+C stocks on magnum rifles that have been actually used in schite conditions without fail for over 40 years I have no qualms. I have one Mac,its a bloody good stock but the price factor deems the B+C`s a bargain in comparison. I had another that was a ripper on a .300 H&H also, alas, gone to a mate lol. I shudder at the Mac prices and the B+C`s are a steal at $550-ish. (aud) There are of course many many other stocks on offer today. Syn stocks imo are more gentle on the shoulder also.
Add a decent aftermarket barrel fitted,it will shoot better than the original fitted barrel. Once again it comes to how much you want to spend. I have a few TSE barrels fitted to PH rifles and the last PH I had done has a Lothar Walther barrel, they are very good barrels imo. If the money is there add a Mod 70 style safety, not necessary of course but again its a better unit. Ditto a trigger change over or trigger work done.
Again "As it is it would do me as a hunting rifle and I would feel comfortable walking the bush with it."

But basically a stock, a barrel,a trigger,a safety. The level of 'price' is up to the owner of course.
The fitted syn stock choice over wood is very important for practical reasons. One often reads of how a rifle wont shoot with a wood stock but even factory fit unbedded good syn stocks shoot oh so well. Even simply dropping the above rifle into a syn stock without changing anything else will make a great improvement.

It comes down to my opening line really and whether its name brands or middle of the road brands.

My mate put "blah blah" tyres on his ute at an extra $100 odd bucks a corner over other good brands...ooh what a price too,I suspect that they were bought as some sort of status symbol ....I said to him, "the ****s wear out like every other tyre does lol"

I knew you’d have a take on it John!

Thank you.

In the U.K., if you have friends in the trade etc, Parker Hale actions come free, old PH’s you can pick up for £50-£150.

If going to put a new stock, new barrel, new trigger, 3 pos safety on it, you might as well also upgrade the cheap Alu floorplate and bottom metal - then you’ve build a cracking rifle for £2000 - £2,500 on a PH action. IMHO, if doing
A. If not use a PH action but find a good 1909, Mod.98, vz24, Persian, Peruvian, Standardd, DWM, 21H or zg47…. Or if using the PH, it would need to be an M81 (steel bottom metal), and at no more than £50 for the donor.

Or, just keep as is and enjoy it

Hi, sorry to hijack the thread but I have a Parker Hale in 300 H and H and was contemplating doing this exact job on it. Would anyone have recommended on who would carry this work out for previous experience. Thanks again

Changing barrel? You’d be going to another magnum long chambering with the elongated mag and opened bolt face, extractor claw etc?
