ParkerHale mounts and rings

My good friend @tozzybum has posted this in response to a conversation we were having by PM.
At one time I had a set of medium height P-H rings. At least I presume they were medium height as they appeared to be midway between the ones I have that are marked RALS and the ones that I have that are marked RAHS. (L for low and H for high, l guess).
In an uncharacteristic fit of generosity I gave them away to another site member some years ago.
I didn't need them then, but I do now!
I was hoping that the info provided by Tozzybum would enable me to identify which rings they were, so that I can try to source replacements.
If anyone else is able to shed light on it I'd be grateful. As far as I can see from the sizing chart, the mid height rings were for different tube sizes (3/4" and 7/8") but mine were definitely 1" (or possibly 1.020").

@VSS what rifle are these mounts and rings for ?
The chart shows a variety of rifles with the particular rings and mounts specified.
The 1” (25.4mm) rings are more readily available whereas the 1.020”/26mm seem to be more difficult to find and therefore command a higher price !
What base mounts are on your rifle….Parker Hale ?

Yes, the rings are to go on a Parker-Hale rifle. The bases (also P-H) are already in situ. Ideally I need 1" rings, but the 26mm rings will also do for a 1" tubed scope by using a thin perspex liner.
Currently on the rifle are RAL S4 rings, but I've had to shim them a bit to keep the objective bell off the barrel. It's working OK, but obviously reduces their grip on the bases and I'm afraid that one day they'll be dislodged, either by a knock or by recoil. The other rings I've got are RAH S 3 (or 4?), but they're a bit higher than I want. I used them with my previous scope, which was bigger, but it was always a bit high, even with a comb raiser.
At one time I had some P-H compatible rings that were midway between the two, but when I put the bigger scope on the rifle I gave them away in response to a wanted ad on here, thinking I'd not be needing them anymore. However, I've now upgraded to a better quality - but more compact - scope, and am trying to do a decent job of mounting it at the height I want.
I suppose I could reduce the amount of shimming under the rings by also shimming under the bases, except that I think they may be brazed on, in which case that idea's a non starter. They certainly are brazed on one of my Parker-Hales. Can't remember which one off the top of my head.

At the moment on your rifle are “RALS4”

R = roll off
A = BSA or BRNO
L = .230”
S = Recoil Stop
4 = 1.02“/ 26mm scope tube.

Your other set are RAHS3 / RAHS4 ??

R = roll off
A = BSA or BRNO
H = .486”
S = Recoil Stop
3 = 1”/ 24.4mm scope tube
4 = 1.02”/ 26mm scope tube

Theoretically to attain a medium height (you already have Low and High albeit different ring sizes) you would need to obtain RANS3 scope rings these would be .330” (medium height) to fit a 1” tube scope on a 19.5mm (l think) dovetail, what are your dovetail mounts ? usually with Parker Hale they are numbered so as to correspond with the scope rings being used and also correct for the height difference (if any) on the receiver rings ??

l hope it helps in any way, it’s what I’ve interpreted from the details that tozzybum supplied to you.

That's really helpful, thanks.

That must be the type of rings I gave away...

So.... If anyone happens to have a spare set of Parker-Hale RAN S3 scope rings kicking about, to fit 19.5mm dovetail, I'd be very pleased to hear about it 🙏

(S4 would be almost as welcome - I can always use an insert to take up the spare 0.02 inches.)

The main criteria is that these scope rings fit the base mounts on your rifle they must match the dovetail perfectly.

It’s quite obvious that there was a need for the three different heights that goes without saying but the difference in height isn’t that great, fine tuning for the user’s eye relief.

l do hope everything comes together and the rings your looking for are the correct size and height for your needs, they are available l have seen them, but maybe not that common, l don’t have any in my collection.

Yes, I admit it is just fine tuning, but I'd like to get it right. It's the first time I've owned a half-decent scope, and it suits the rifle - and my eye - just nicely. By shimming up the low rings, I have at least found a short term solution, and ascertained that the height, eye relief, etc etc are OK.
Now I just need to find a set of the correct rings to do the job properly.

Google is your friend, the price might not be !
Seen one set of RAN S3 for sale at Emma Custom Rifles, but it stated 20+mm dovetail required, which is at odds with what the info posted by @tozzybum and yourself implied.
Checked my dovetails and they're 19.5mm, as expected.

(Oh yes, and there's the small issue of the price...!)

Emma Custom Rifles are not the cheapest prices that you’ll find on the internet but (said with tongue in cheek) if they have the only ones that you can find…..

Keep checking the internet and eBay you might strike lucky there will be some out there it’s just a matter of time.

If you contact Emma Custom ask them to check the dovetail size.

Make sure in your own mind that the RANS3 are the correct rings for your rifle and scope !!

Sorry Tim no ,I think its time to ring Norman Clark at Rugby and seek their advice.
There's too many variables for my small brain to digest.
Alternatively ring the Barnet gun shop and see if the can explain atb

Yes, and perhaps I'll put a "wanted" ad up on here. Maybe the person who I gave the first set to has finished with them by now 👍 😂

(If whoever it was is reading this, then be reassured I'm only kidding - I was only too glad to help you out, and I hope they've been put to good use).

If anyone is looking for some.....

There are some Parker Hale rings on the Southern Counties Sporting Auction at the moment.
Lot 581. Ends tomorrow (Wed 27th)
Not sure what type they are. But poss worth a punt. 3 pairs.

Thanks! I just had a look. 2 pairs of OK looking high rings, and one pair of decidedly doubtful looking low rings. No medium ones, unfortunately 😞

Have a word with Fulton's at Bisley as I donated a bunch of assorted Parker Hale rings to them a while ago.

@VSS There are a pair of RANS4 (26mm) scope rings on eBay at the moment but some foolish fellow has filed of the recoil stop making them quite useless and the seller is wanting £65 buy it now price, for me l wouldn’t even contemplate buying them but if you can make any use of them put in a silly offer and mention the missing recoil stop, but personally l would hold out for the correct set !
