PDS 1&2 now recognised

Be interesting to watch how the numbers balance out in the future, DSC L1 & 2 holders against the PDS thing.

And even more interesting to compare the figures with the number of active deer stalkers, both professional and recreational.

Just watched the PDS shooting assessment on YouTube. That was enlightening. Definitely glad I did the DSC.

Was that the one in the snow? I bet they are glad that they got the FC approval signed before that aired.
I wasn't impressed with that video, in fact I thought that it was pretty amateurish, but in the interest of fairness I have to point out that it wasn't produced by Peter Jones and County Deer Stalking.
Whether you like the guy and agree with what he is doing or not, you have to admit that his videos are always very professional.

The one thing that I always say to those who ask about any qualification is this - what’s the qualifications of the instructor ?

In the event of a serious incident, the investigating authorities (Police, HSE) will look at the quals of the person involved.
If they’re in order, they’ll then drill down and ask ‘who taught you this skill’ and then go a look at the instructors quals.
If they’re not completely and utterly up to date and correct, that person WILL be held accountable as well.
That means something as simple as a DSC1 instructor not having the required adult education quals which allow them to stand up in front of a class and teach.

I take on board that in the old days experience counted - in fact the motto of my former place of work was ‘Experiencia Docet’ which means ‘experience teaches’. But in today’s society you better have the relevant quals. That matters more than the relevant experience. To some …

Absolutely right. In my line of work we call it SQEP - suitably qualified & experienced person. This includes being in date for all aspects of what you’re teaching. You will also need an adult teaching qual to be considered an appropriate instructor. If you don’t meet these criteria and it goes bent, prepare to be shafted by investigatory / regulatory bodies / the police as it’s all to easy for them to lay the blame at your feet whether you did anything wrong or not.

Totally. And this area is somewhere that there is a great weakness in our world.

Yep, I’ve had the Hyenas on the sniff a couple of times during my working life looking for someone to shaft / blame (as I’m sure others have too). Luckily each time I was watertight. The look of disappointment on their little faces as they realised I wasn’t the one going to be left without a chair when the music stopped was priceless. Lesson learnt when I was 21 years old, and stuck since then.

Perhaps a wider question is whether we should all be qualified, DMQ, PDS or alternative, or is it the case that we don't need no education?

What is the difference between the DMQ syllabus and the PDS ?
Genuine question.
DMQ is a more regarded qualification than pds. It always was but times change,I’m old school probably. In the dmq2 we had to do 3 stalks/shots gland recognition and I believe that dmq have reduced this to one? So according to nature Scot there are more deer than ever so why would it be made less of an effort to achieve?

Education is always a good thing, you never stop learning👍 but to invent another qualification to either make money or perhaps you failed the dmq or what ever reason is not ideal? Why not improve what we have rather than make up another? Lantra will do anything for a few quid!! They will be doing car driving tests and licenses next.

But is there any difference in the course content?
If not why does it matter?
