Most sensible suggestion yet.Stick to sheep
A BBC Radio 4 programme fact checked it and found it was actually closer to £15-40 per year.I believe the figure of £500/year was the figure stated, however this included chocolate, pain killers, underwear and “other items”….
The fact check people reviewed this and found it to be closer to £128/year.
Precisely.I’m not saying that’s not an issue for some depending on income however the grim reality is that a percentage of the people or their guardians had no idea how to prioritise so other items (such as smart phones, alchohol, branded clothing etc) was put in front of sanitary products.
It takes a determined dedication to wilful ignorance to reach adolescence and be unable to put aside 50p per month to make sure you don’t have an embarrassing episode at school, especially for that large majority of allegedly impoverished children who have the money to spend on smartphones.Of course no one should suffer, and no one should be denied an education due to this however we must also look at the education of people and where priorities lay.
And one of the first steps in that process is to dismiss idiotic politically motivated attempts to exploit people with entirely false campaigns. We must realise that education and instilling people with a sense of self belief is sometimes better than a hand out that will never break a cycle.
There are a number of things wrong with your post. Among them are 97 percent of 12-15 year olds do not own smartphones. Refer to this report by that peak woke outfit, Ofcom, pdf page 36, which shows the percentage of 12-15yos with smartphones is mid-80s percent, not 97%. https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/ass.../children-media-use-attitudes-2019-report.pdfResearch has found that 97% of 12-15 year olds are wealthy enough to own smartphones or tablets, and other research that a third of children can’t afford sanitary products at a monthly cost (assuming they’re posh kids and shop at waitrose) of no more than £3. Five times cheaper at aldi.
The whole campaign is a complete falsehood, based on a survey asking women off the top of their head what they thought they spent on tampons or sanitary towels each month, which only proved that the women chosen were completely clueless on an extraordinary scale, and compounded by left-wing organisations and lunatics making bonkers estimates of the consequences. Anyone taken in by the issue of period poverty is a complete fool, which is why it is Scottish Government policy.
It might, if you had linked to it. I used a different survey (Children: tablet and smartphone ownership by age UK 2019 | Statista) which gave 97% for 2019. Even using your figure of mid 80’s percent, one still finds that the claims of the number of children too poor to have sanitary products is very, very implausible indeed. So, on the whole, that point is essentially correct. What else was wrong? There are a number of things wrong with your post. Among them are 97 percent of 12-15 year olds do not own smartphones. Precisely, and it is this sort of institutionalised idiocy that is a major cause of the cost of living crisis. In order to mitigate a problem that in fact does not really exist, the taxpayer is stumping up millions of quid per year (£2.79 million for 2020) purely for schools, never mind the bureaucratic costs of getting to that point. £2.79 million is sufficient at retail prices to provide for the entire needs of all girls at school in the UK, and obviously far more than the necessary cost of addressing the alleged poverty, even if it did exist. It is exactly this sort of nonsensical and incontinent spending which has brought the country to the unenviable position it is now in.Then there is already a government scheme to hand out sanitary products in schools. As well as any cost barrier (are we really arguing in the middle of a cost of living crisis that everybody can affords pads???), girls/women may forget their pads, or have an unexpected period. Here is the scheme Period product scheme for schools and colleges in England
which contains the wording, "Period products, such as pads and tampons, should be available for all who need them, when they need them, in order to access education. Having periods should not be a barrier to education for anyone. Making girls and women aware of the scheme is vital to making sure they can access period products when they are needed and to reduce the stigma surrounding periods." The remainder of the page has a long commentary section which gives other reasons on top of cost, for providing girls/women with sanitary products.
Whatever you feel about this, it's a bit late to the party if you want to get worked up about it now.
Read the link above, it has been a thought out program for several years, so on top of the dude who got fired in OP, there will have been government ministers, civil servants, teachers, local authorities etc etc all giving resources to this over a long time.
Highly absorbent (apparently). Most sensible suggestion yet.
True, but the reason that they’ve lost their job had nothing to do with whether the position was necessary or their ability to perform the role, the role has been discontinued purely because of the gender of the successful candidate, which pretty much defines sexual discrimination does it not?OK then, find another way. The person who was supposed to be looking into it appears to have lost their job.
You're right. The whole thing is a shambles at many different levels, by the sounds of it. It appears that complaints by some more priveledged women in society, who are probably as far removed from these issues as most members of this site, have lead to the demise of the role. Pure selfishness on their part, and blatant discrimination.True, but the reason that they’ve lost their job had nothing to do with whether the position was necessary or their ability to perform the role, the role has been discontinued purely because of the gender of the successful candidate, which pretty much defines sexual discrimination does it not?
Indeed. I'd actually like to see evidence of the alleged 'threats and abuse', to be honest. In fact, there are so many things about this that uncovered probably wouldn't paint the entire episode in the best light. Quite apart from the (unfounded?) allegations of threats, is the apparent insinuation that a 'history' of some sort already existed between ol' Jason and the appointer. And as for him being the strongest candidate for the job? Really? The best person to talk to teenage girls about periods is a 27-year-old male personal trainer? Ok. What was his motivation for chasing, and accepting the role? He didn't think people would wonder? Then there's the whole question of the role itself. If it were indeed required, why hasn't the role been reallocated to a woman? After all, matey was only seconded to the group from his previous role of student welfare officer at Dundee College so no doubt he'll be glad to get back there after the traumatic time he's apparently had? Or does the fact it hasn't been reallocated illustrate the fact that it wasn't actually required in the first place? Either way, the Period Dignity Action Group now look like a bunch of tw*ts.a period dignity officer, please no more.

What I suspect, is that someone has had the backbone to call this BS for what it is and ordered the plug to be pulled. And the shower of happy-clappy super-sparkly halfwits responsible have been forced into a retreat. And rather than admit they made a complete ballsup of the entire affair from start to finish, they start laying blame at the door of external influences. Embarrassing bloody shambles, from start to end.
Give it a month, and it will be.Enough already!
Done to death!
Stop it now!
Period!
