personal best fox

Got you by 7 yards there Mark andsoother is anoter 10 in front of but please don't feel you need to beat those distances(big tongue in cheek for those that don't get it) Me too at 50yards and getting closer is a very real skill in its own right!

thats a cracker!! heard a few people complementing that round! whats sort of figures does it produce? is it a bowers custom job you got?

Distance and "personal bests" will always be a contentious issue. Given the equipment available in this day and age long distance shots on foxes in calm weather should not be a problem for a capable shooter. The problem arises when distance becomes a desirable thing. My personal best is a dead fox

the long one i shot was coming back to cubs on a boundry wood it squat down for a pee , giving itself away as a vixen , i missed it at about 100  . Next it showed on some spring barley on the opposite bank , having been missed and given where the cubs were it was a must get fox . Given this is a custom rifle and im a capable shot i took it . Im doing this for a living and not for fun and would much sooner have plopped it in her ear

i was out with a good mate walking along the bottom of some blackcurrant rows. when we saw a fox 150ish yards up a row. as we walked up to it we could see it had a rabbit in it mouth at 30 yards away it droped the rabbit and tucked up under the row. we walked right up to it, like 3ft away it did not move. the end of the mod was no more than 10" or 12" away from her head. shot with a .243 55gr b/tip. you had to see it to believe. atb mm

because i pulled the first shot and i know what the rifle is capable of , and as ive said im doing this for a job not a hobby and im sure you know she will have moved them that night

how long have you used the 20 tac for foxing? like i say heard a few people talking about it, especialy whenever i take a trip to reloading solutions. did steve bowers build it for you?
my buddy uses a 204 and he did have a few runners with the factory remmy ammo! but now he's using his own loads that has stopped. rems just seemed to fragment on the surface even though they were 40 grainers!

Yep , steve built it maybe 4 years ago there is a bit of talk about it localy but not many people have seen it in action . To be honest i dont know much about technical data but i think your mate would do better without ballistic tips but you would have to talk to steve about that , all i know is how this gun performs , its an eye opener as to how many you have about as before you might leave one because it was too far for the 250 and go home thinking you had killed one and seen two others , now you come home with four in the bucket having killed all youve seen its a hell of a tool and i can shoot a bit

I would like a custom but never bothered my sako hunter weight barrel(22250) shoots 1/2 inch groups for fun and its 11 year old now.
I will when the barrel packs up go 22250 ackley with a fast twist.
It shoots very flat with 50 gr and most shots do not exit foxes.
If its windy and a morning vigil I use my 7mm rem mag with 110gr TNT hp's at 3,550 fps.
That does reach out and destroys foxes.
I have taken troublesome foxes with both (in daylight) well over 1/2 km. (WOULD RATHER HAVE HAD THEM AT 140M BUT WAS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN) But practice regular out to 500ms.
a .223 for comparison.

well you guys got my mouth watering now!! tell me "trouble" do you use the shooter he built you for everything when it comes to foxing? i mean lamping an daytime stuff? or have you got another light weight outfit for the lamp?
i'm used to have a 223 a few years ago it was a steyer, boy did i nail some foxes under the lamp with it! but it wasn't really suited for varminting work. so i built myself or should i say had built a .22ppc which i use for both because the old bill round here told me i couldn't have both calibre's! it does just about do both tasks but its just a little heavy & sometimes when you call more than 1 fox in at a time it doesn't cycle the next round in as smooth as a more slender cased round like my old 223! an because its only got a 20" barrel i know i could do a lot more in daylight with a longer barrel. if i had my steyer in the cabinet i would grab it to go lamping everytime!

I use it for everything long range crows on the ground , lamping and sitting out for foxes . The modorater runs the full length of the barrel so its balanced better that than having it hanging off the end

Nice shooting, I have been a proffesional pest controller for years I don't know how many fox's I have shot and at what distances. I use what is now a signifiacntly customised .223 Tikka that will group at one hundred yards less than 1/2" with a Zeiss 3x12x56 ill rec on it. I pride my self on hunting the animal to a range so I know for sure what it is and can see an instant kill. Please gents great shooting it is but you will mame more than you kill instantly at those distances. If Joe public see you/hear you shoot and find a wounded fox...there will be trouble ahead! Getting the bullet drop is not the real problem if an experienced shooter using usual foxing calibers it will not be much any way.....its the wind, that can move the point of impact 3 to 4" at that distance.

Any way less of the wise old fart going on it is good shooting just practise with the wind at that distance with a full size fox target and see how many are in the kill zone.

Good shooting

with the greatest of respect ive been keepering for 28 years i know my limits and my rifles , as ive stated before this was a must get animal . The 20tac will out perform a 223 or 250 at these ranges and provide an instant knock down , im not into trick shooting im into killing foxes . If you read up on this caliber and do your homework you might get one

Apologies, after 28 yrs you know what is best on your land and I fully understand the need to control the fox, but why the “personal best statement”? My point was its alright making these shots but be careful you will maim more then you kill just practise before doing it, that’s all. It was not directed at you personally, honestly it was for everyone. I just see and hear of many a fox shooter declaring personal bests but leaving out the ½ hit ones and don’t’ forget we are controlling vermin under the general licence!
Yes. 20TAC excellent round it’s a necked down .223 rem that moves light weight bullets very fast so little drop. In my humble opinion it’s a bit short on ft/lbs (it’s also more likely to be effected by the wind) but it is a very good pest control round so as you say is ideal for your needs.

All the best and good hunting!

More apologies perhaps leave this alone, a 20tac will out perform a 223 in ft/lbs on like for like weight bullet. Will leave well alone from now on.

Bruce Potts wrote a good review piece on the .20 TAC in ST 30 April 2009. The review was on a Steve Bowers job. It makes interesting reading.

39grn Blitzking with 24grns Vit N130 gave MV 3,880 fps/1,304ftlb, which is not bad at all.Group at 100yds less than a 5p piece.

Zeroed at 100yds using 40grn V max -0.9" at 200, -5.6" 300 and -15" at 400. Ballistic co efficient of .204 bullet is better than .224 ( it is longer and thinner) so less wind drift.

From the sounds of it appears the ideal vermin and fox round and deadly at very long range in the correct hands.

Would be interested to know what scope and zero range our shooter uses?
