Petition: close shops on Boxing Day

Well I do fear that all the old traditional holidays are going. But, interestingly enough, in France at one time 26 December was NOT a public holiday. Even the banks being open.

I did think that but having spent last winter in Nigeria and the one before that in UK wasn't certain. Haven't had a Christmas in France since 2009 or so. This Christmas will be in France so, thank you, Pine Marten for the input.

Although, of course, unlike here in UK November 11 (and May 8) are very much public holidays. As, really, they should be here in UK. And Armistice Day at the Cenotaph back to being on 11 November if it was once so?

Christmas day was not an official holiday in Scotland until sometime in the 1970s it was eventually made a holiday because of unofficial absenteeism.

Rather than prohibiting it, I think it would be more appropriate to oblige employers looking to open on Boxing day, or any other public holidays, to pay them double time.

Treble on Christmas day! Please! Double time is for Sundays and bank holidays. Standard overtime, over hours, is time and a half. Ooh...you Gradgrind!

I used to get double time plus another day to take off sometime, which seems reasonable. I really can't see shops closing on Boxing Day, it's such a money spinner for them. But proper compensation from their employers should be the thing.

Over 25% of retail sales over Christmas 2015 were made online, but I notice the petition only wants to shut "shops". Imagine if they shut down all the websites and online fulfilment centres as well - there would be an outcry.

Please, no more online petitions

Shops and businesses should stop treating all their employees as equals!!!!!!!!!!!:stir:
All religious holidays should be compulsory and unpaid. whatever religion, you are only entitled to your own religious holidays off work. To make it fair, all religious holidays should be unpaid so that nobody gets any more paid days off work than other religions.
If your religion does not celebrate or acknowledge Christmas, Easter etc then get back into the shop / office / factory and work. Everybody celebrate their own and only their own religious holidays. Then we can say goodbye to the phrase "Happy Holidays" and use the proper phrase of "Happy Christmas" again.
Then the people working in the shops would not be missing out because to them boxing day is meaningless and their would be no need for the management to pay a higher rate of pay for those days. The shops would be open for those who want to shop. Everybody wins!!!!!
I'm going to run for president I think.
:stir: over

Are you crazy?:cuckoo: There's already enough panic buying on Christmas Eve! If you shut shops for two days in a row then people will surely just starve to death!

All these petitions get on my tits. Not too mention for many people students and low income they absolutely rely on triple time and such like to make money. I know I did as a student from 17/26 never had an Xmas/NYE off. Worlds gone mad, especially when you consider how agnostic we are to Christian faith these days.

How about a petition to ban petitions on this site? They only irritate people. Surely as field sport enthusiasts we can all see the harm in small pressure groups demanding the banning of other people's legitimate activities.

I'd go with that. I think that "Off Topic" should be off topic but, maybe, at least for links to petitions they should only be shooting petitions only?

Apart from the petition to be allowed to marry horses. My friend "Squatter" is it starting one.

What sort of horses? Female horses of course! There's nothing queer about "Squatter"!

Risky! Referring to one's wife as a mare could lead to painful kicks.

"Squatter"? God only knows what other habits that could allude to!
