if there is an influx of HGV drivers from Europe you can be guaranteed one thing, they are not going to be good drivers, most European countries have driver shortages, and most will pay the same wage as here, and at least in Europe HGV drivers are respected, and have a lot more facilities than we do here, they have large parking areas on the Motorways where you don't have to pay to park, and where there is room to park for the night without fear of being robbed, or your sheets being slashed, also by working in Mainland Europe there is always the chance of getting home for the weekend.
Why should drivers travel over here, have to find accommodation (as it is illegal to sleep in the cab at weekends, unless in a place with toilets etc.) when they can get the same pay back home, also remember some of these drivers got their licence not on their driving skills, but by how much they had in their wallets, many Hauliers over here learned this at a huge cost, when they thought they were hiring cheap labour, they soon found out cheap labour comes at a high cost, many of the good European drivers that came over here are still here with their families.
Even Agency HGV drivers over here still get £10 ph, you can get that working in Aldi or Asda filling shelves, the sooner that Hauliers realise that HGV driving is a profession, and pay a decent wage, the sooner they will be able to recruit drivers to fill the shortfall, the Govt need to do their part too, making sure Drivers can park safely at night and have the facilities they need when they do.
