Pickup?

Had a 61 plate hilux for 6 years and it never missed a beat, a new alternator is all it needed. Just replaced with a newer Mk7 which I instantly had undersealed, it was tidy underneath (obviously not perfect as it’s not new).

My suggestion is try to find a 64-16 plate that has been looked after, not too much towing (ideally no tow hook), check the tub to see if it’s smashed to bits, a sign it’s been worked hard, and obviously get it on a ramp. Engines (especially 3.0l) are great provided they’ve been serviced and timing belt done.

If a car costs less than £2k a year then it’s damn cheap motoring IMO.

I bought an ex MOD 2.5 Mk7 in 2017. It is a poverty spec Vigo. The chassis, tub and crosss members are still in good order. It had 40k on it. 100k later it’s still purring. I replaced one battery last year. After 15 years I reckon that’s pretty good.
Upgrades have been a set of Pedders shocks and springs up front and shocks rear. That transformed the vehicle. An oil seal on the front differential leaked, that was pricey ! They are apparently known for it.
The alternator was replaced two years ago. Otherwise it’s been basic service items, oil, filters, brake pads and shoes, a few bushings.
I do run it on premium diesel, runs a lot better and the emissions on the test are remarkably low.IMG_1801.jpeg

I would keep the Defender. It’s only going to be an appreciating asset and I’m sure you’ll regret selling it , would buy something cheap and reliable for commute etc , maybe a petrol Skoda Octavia estate.
