Had a 61 plate hilux for 6 years and it never missed a beat, a new alternator is all it needed. Just replaced with a newer Mk7 which I instantly had undersealed, it was tidy underneath (obviously not perfect as it’s not new).
My suggestion is try to find a 64-16 plate that has been looked after, not too much towing (ideally no tow hook), check the tub to see if it’s smashed to bits, a sign it’s been worked hard, and obviously get it on a ramp. Engines (especially 3.0l) are great provided they’ve been serviced and timing belt done.
If a car costs less than £2k a year then it’s damn cheap motoring IMO.
