Plastic alternative?

So before vac machine became common the following method was used.
Big tub of cold water was needed.
Meat was placed in a plastic bag and top closed round a drinking straw with elastic band.
The bag submerged leaving drinking straw out of the water, when all air escaped the straw was pulled out of back, leaving one Vaccuum wrapped piece of meat.

You can do that with ziplock bags too. Close the zip almost all the way, dunk in water, then complete the closure.

May not be suitable for your purpose at the mo but I only did a quick search, fungi based packing material is the way to go

The bags I referred to earlier did not stand up to time and within a couple of weeks had freezer burn on the mince. I’ve gone back to these thy work very well and claim to be biodegradable. Have to say that they don’t feel any different to plastic and work extremely well long term (well mince doesn’t last more than a few weeks in my house!).
I do still vac pack joints and steaks and try to re-use the bags.
