PPU amunition for hunting

Use them in my 270 absolutely fine then reload the cases with some Barnes brass bullets for a premium round. they group about an inch different at 100 yards as long as you rifle likes them no worries Tom

I shoot 223 55gn FMJ for target/plinking and they have the exact same POI and grouping as hornady 55gn v-max. lucky for me! The factory ballistic info in the packs and on the PPU website is excatly the same.

I sell them and different calibres have different "quirks"
All in all, the brass is good quality apart from 6.5x55 which is poor. Some Sako's don't like the 243 in both 90 & 100 gr - my guess is tight chambers.
I've personally used 22 Hornet (SP), 223 Rem(FMJ, 243(SP - 90 & 100), 6.5x55 (SP & FMJ), 308(SP, FMJ & BTHP) and 30-06(SP & FMJ) and found accuracy good considering the price. Lets face it, it's cheap ammo that works in more guns than not. Personally, I agree with an earlier observation - snobbery pays a big part.

I used them in 9.3x62 for jackals and foxes, they don't do good mushroom but for the price of 1£ are very good.

Hardly surprising I'd have thought - a 285gr SP bullet trundling along at 2200fps isn't likely to expand much on something as light as a fox or jackal is it?

You are right, for bigger animals I use Woodleigh, don't trust to PPU. They don't have the same quality in different boxes.

I use nothing but PPU ammunition in my Mannlicher 270. They group well and drop whatever they hit. As for not expanding when used on a fox I've yet to drop a fox with a 130g PPU Soft Point and found that the bullet hasn't made a right royal mess of the thing!
As for the price, I get mine for just £9.50 per box so I'm certainly not complaining, and I couldn't give a fig about what the "ammo snobs" might say!

9.3x62 on a fox... we consider those good for boar over here...
still havent had a chance to test them in my BRNO yet though. but as soon as I do I will write up my thoughts

Taken plenty of roe with them in .308. Had no issues and most drop on the spot. Only recovered 2 of the bullets before and they both mushroomed well enough. Can't complain for the price and they are sub inch at 100 yards for me.

Agreed. I use them in my Howa 1500 in 308. Sub inch@100 also. Red and Roe don't like them though.
I will say that in my rifle they can be a little on the tight side. Knocking the shoulder back by .003" gives a nice snug fit on reloading.

My a-bolt shoots sub inch groups with 110 gr factory Vmax at 200 yards...shoots better than me with Homeload 130 ssts but 150 ppu it opens up to 3" at 200.. Still acceptable to me at £15 a box

I used PPU in my 243 for years and it was ok grouped ok but nothing special just good average grouping but good enough, I recently got a second hand tikka M65 an older rifle but very nice indeedy and I bought some PPU in .270 and it grouped with all holes touching at 100yds except one shot I know I pulled but the rest were all touching that's pretty good I would say - as per the boat load of comments on here depends on the rifle I suppose however despite my happiness with the PPU I'm still gonna reload as it's something I've always fancied doing :)

Guess ill try them in the new .270 then. Slight concern about this pinhole debate as i have never lost a roe and would like to keep this as being the case for a good while yet!!I would prfer to lose some meat every time if it means the beast is on the deck pronto

I've used it in three rifles, .22/250, .243 and .308, sub inch with the .22/250, 1.5" with the .308, waste of time with the .243. If it shoots well in your rifle use it, if it doesn't, then you haven't wasted too much money

I've used it in .243, .308 & 30-06 & .375H&H, friends of mine have also used it in those plus .270, 6.5x55, 9.3x62
All of us went from being ok with it to hating it
It's the only ammo which has ever had bullets come apart upon firing for me which left targets - and on one occasion a roe - looking like a shotgun had hit it
I only know one person who uses it and likes it, but just the one, it's the other way round for any other make/brand of ammo I can think of
I'll "plink" with it to try to keep things cheaper when shooting the 375 a lot, but after what happened to the roe never on game again
There's an element of "ammo snobbery" in some folk's reaction to PPU cartridges for sure, but when so many people have so much bad to say about it then maybe there's something more than that to it

I’ve used a fair bit of it over the years and I have 100 tucked away in the ammo cabinet for the .222 now, at £12 per 20 I couldnt walk past them. I’ve always found it to be fine. I probably wouldn’t use it on deer now, but I have shot quite a few with the .30-06 180 grn and the 6.5x55 156grn.
The one thing I would say, we all spend thousands of pounds on gear, scopes, thermals, rifles, boots, trucks, jackets, binos, knives etc. There is and always will be only one thing that connects us to our quarry, and that’s the bullet. I’m not worried if one has cost me a couple of pounds.
