PPU lead free. Anyone tried it?

Was chatting at local shop, about lead free bullets for reloading. They mentioned that PPU are starting to do a lead free range.
Some loaded ammunition and probably soon, loose projectiles.
The has some 308 rounds in stock, so I thought I'd have a box. (A bit of an extravagance for me, as I don't recall buying any loaded rifle rounds in 30-odd years.)

Not tried them yet. Wondered if anyone has any experience?

The dealer was saying how they are a jacketed bullet but with a soft lead free core. Weight and balistically pretty much identical to a leaded equivilant. So theoretically easier to transition to, making load development a bit quicker, when they start selling projectiles only.

PPU Lead Free Ammo on Test - from Henry Krank. A new jacketed soft point bullet from PPU, designed specifically for eco-friendly game hunting. The PPU Z-Grom is a new take on lead free ammunition. This bullet is made of a copper alloy with a small tin core, giving it the weight and performance of a traditional lead cored bullet. The Z-Grom replicates conventional projectiles perfectly, and uses no plastic tips or similar, making it a practical and environmentally friendly choice for game hunters.

£63 for a pack of 100 seems better than all current lead free prices - 30 cal (.308) Z-Grom 170gr

Would have been nicer to have more than just a 170gr option, although its worth a try at these prices.

what an interesting single choice in the whole line up of possibles . 308 bit heavy for calibre tin core and not the other more UK popular uk cartridges

This is what I got five or six weeks ago, didn't clean the barrel just tried a quick 4 shot group. Agree with above about being a bit heavy for calibre, I normally use 150gr Sierra Gamekings. No idea what it's like in the field or at longer range, it's a "work in progress" right now. Due to try out S&B eXergy in 110gr and 165gr Barnes TTSX (I think).

It would be nice to have the full range of the PPU Z-Grom bullets available.
I asked them about Z-Grom last year and they didn't know anything about them at that time. I was looking for 8mm but they've taken their usual stance and just brought in a limited range of bullets from PPU that they think will sell quickly.

Considering the weight I am also wondering if it takes time to perfect lighter bullets with the non lead alternative keeping the required length and efficiency. So they mighth have started with what worked but don't see many going for 170gr for hunting owing to the bullet drop and loss in energy after 200 yards. It might however work for woodland stalking where shots can be taken upto 150 yards. Just my view.

My thoughts were that they had been developed for running boar.

There are better and cheaper alternatives when it comes to lead-free bullets than PPU.

I am using this Solid Brass Bullets – LOS manufacturing.
It is deformation bullet. Top 1/3 of the bullet deform into three separate parts, causing damage to internal organs, while the rest of the bullet penetrates the carcass and assure reliable blood trail.

This is the group that I shot from BRNO COMBO combination gun, which is not intended for precision shooting. I was shooting from tree stand, with very limited front support for barrel. It is OK for my hunting needs, but surely it can be done much better from proper barrel and proper firing position.

I can buy these for 49€/100 pieces.

There is also UK distributor listed on the webpage of the manufacturer.

Regarding PPU. Original version of GROM, had lead cap inserted at the top of the bullet, which is quite strange in combination with lead-free bullet.

Their ammunition is known to be very dirty for barrels, which of course is not the case if you are just reloading their bullets.

Fascinating, to say the least!

Dari, out of interest what chambering is your combo please.

You say that the original Grom ammunition is dirty, I don't know about that as I've only ever used their bullets and not their ammunition. I can however say that the bullets must be quite soft as they leave a fair amount of copper in the barrel.

My CZ BRNO COMBO is chambered in 308WIN for rifled barrel and 12/76 for shot barrel.
With Delta Titanium 2.5-15x50 SF and Pard007 I can use it for boars, roe deer, foxes...
