Pulsar digex illumination

Tried the night tec t38 and got white out problems, it has adjustable beam but no power adjustment. I put the onboard lamp back on and tinkered some more with scope settings and did get some improvement, I’ve found x8 quite frosty and x16 pretty useless, what am I doing wrong🦊

Hi,
I’ve been through this same situation recently.
The ir that comes with the scope is crap. I borrowed loads of different irs of my mates and eventually I bought a black sun dark engine covert 940nm from Clive ward and i can now get a good picture out to 200yd plus. I also bought a adjustable ir mount from ludicrous lumens and this also helped with getting the beam exactly where you need it.

Agreed the x 16 is terrible but x 8 is what I would generally chose for night shooting at ranges out to 200yds and that works well for me. I don't touch the side wheel thing. I turn it on and put it on standby when not shooting. Then the only buttons I use are "on" and "record" and sometimes adjust the focus if shooting something much closer or much further away but the focusing is not particularly fussy.

There isn't really much to play with but I assume you have loosened the collar around the IR head and moved it so the beam of the IR gives you the best possible picture before screwing/locking the collar back around the head to hold it in situ?

And I presume you have focused the scope, both the front objective barrel but also the rear ocular so that you get a sharp image of the menu on the screen etc?

I mean apart from that, it is pretty much just switch on and go. The supplied IR seems fine to me on the lowest setting out to HMR bunny ranges which is max 130ydsish. If I was foxing, I would crank it up a bit further for the longer shots.

Not sure what else to suggest really. Pulsar have clearly designed it so that is doesn't need much IR. The picture I get around 30-45mins after sunset without IR on is very good. Crisp and defined. It is only when the light truly goes that IR is necessary. I can imagine that on a full moon night, the IR would not be necessary at all.

Thanks Cottis, yes, all your suggestions have been carried out. I’ve put electrical tape across the bottom of the objective lense bell to omitt the crescent glow from the moderator in the bottom of the screen, do you think this could affect the quality of the picture?

Yep same here, 940nm seems to be the way to go with the Digex.

Grumpy, I’m looking to get the adjustable mount from ludicrous, could you tell me, did you get low, medium or high and does it cut out glare from the moderator. Also could you tell me the diameter of the dark sun lamp body, is it 30mm?

Hi gluggs,
I originally got a lot of glare of the moderator when I used the ir that you get with the scope. I got a mod cover to try and eliminate it.
I got a high mount from ludicrous lumens and also put some higher mounts on the scope, just to try and get the ir as much distance as possible away from the mod. I also found mounting the ir further back on the scope, also seemed to help. The diameter of the ir body is 25mm from Clive ward. I’ll put up a pic oh how I have my rifle set up and also the ir that I’ve got. ive tried a lot and I think they all add something into the mix to make a good picture through your digex.
Good luck

Can anybody help me regarding the magnification of the digex, I would like to switch on to take a shot and be permanently on 8x on main screen, I’ve managed to do this picture in picture, is it the case that every time you switch off and back on again the main screen defaults back to 4x. I would like to just switch on and take the shot without messing about.

If you put it on the standby screen between shots, when you then short press the on button, you will be on the last mag setting you used. When I am shooting, I never turn it off. I just have the screen on standby like with the Pulsar thermals.

Thanks Cottis, that’s the magnification issue sorted, I’ve also taken grumpy’s advice and ordered the black sun dark engine covert 940 and the adjustable Ir mount, I really appreciate all the help and if anybody has any more input that will help us to get the very best out of the digex it would be much appreciated 🦊

Let me know how you get on with the Black Sun, might follow suit.

Hi,
It was originally blueroll (on a different thread) who said that I should try a black sun dark engine 940nm ir, as he’d previously used one with a digex and had success with it.
Well done blueroll.👍

Well done everybody, keep the info coming. As soon as I get it and try it I’ll let you know OJ🦊
When you get it you need to try and align it so that the beam sits high in the screen, it helps to avoid the whiteout in the foreground when veiwing along flat terrain.

How are you getting on with the black sun dark engine covert 940?
