I suppose value is down to what you are prepared to pay. The new Helions are undoubtedly the best but are not cheap. There is a lite range just announced but not available for a week or two yet that will cost around 1300 and has the same technology as the top stuff about 18 months ago.
I see you are in Highland. Gregor Macleod in Tain sells this stuff, always gives good advice and is never far away on price
Guys, can anyone explain to me what's the most value for money thermal out there? And the best place to price one.
Eg best all round for general stalking.
Aye, I usually buy everything from him.
I don't think I'm top interested in paying 3600 for one...
I travel to Golspie and beyond 3 or 4 times a year with work and try to get time to visit Macleods, unfortunately timings don't always work out but.today was the day - like a kid in a toy shop!
I went for a Pulsar FDX50 and within a week I had sent it back for a refund. The FDX50 is not that easy to change from hand held to scope, and when I did finally put it on my scope I missed a fox at about 80yds checked scope without it and I was spot on. There has been talk of a change in point of impact with them. I now have a Pulsar XQ50 and it has changed the way go stalking and see more.

There's a new model to the FXD50, I've got the new FXQ50 Core add-on coming next week. I did try the previous mode but the image quality wasn't great. However the new model has an upgraded sensor and should be better. I'll be checking for point of impact differences as soon as I get out with it, but I do recall that the Core POI can be adjusted via the menu when mounted.
It will be ****. front mounted systems need to be high end or they are dreadful. zooming in to the back of a screen will be worse than zooming in to the back of a NV tube and most of those are bad. If you can live with 3x mag and sub 150 yard shooting then they will be ok. I often find myself in the 10-15x mag to make a shot so i have no idea how people make these compromises with this current generation of thermals. Helion XQ38 to spot with seems to be bang on the performance/price sweet spot.I've sold my Apex XD75 to get this but if it's no good, it'll go back and be exchanged for either a Trail or the new Apex with rangefinder. The main reason for going for the Core is to be able to swap it between rifles and the ability to use my dayscopes which I prefer if at all possible. Will find out on Tuesday when it comes!
The POI shift is always a problem on budget clip ons. When you fully understand what it takes to make a unit with no shift then you understand how impossible it is with a budget russian made commercial unit. The ATN PS22 was crap for the same reason tooI went for a Pulsar FDX50 and within a week I had sent it back for a refund.
